The surge in unemployment due to the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) pandemic has resulted in an increase in inquiries about resume services and career coaching. Like most of us, I am now under a 24/7 "shelter in place" order and have closed my downtown office. Since I was at the end of my lease the last day of April, I cleared out the office and am now working from home, indefinitely. I am not taking any in-person appointments at this time. Because my children are now being "ho...meschooled" via distance learning and my wife also works at home, I am figuring out what kinds of work, and how many projects I can take on. I am not accepting new 1-1 coaching clients nor interview coaching at this time. This may change if I can determine a way to do it effectively. I realize that this time of uncertainty in the job market is causing anxiety, but I also want to caution people about investing several hundred dollars in career coaching or resume writing services at this time. There is so much uncertainty that your money may be better spent elsewhere. If you have a stable job, consider staying put. Jobs that are posted already may be put on hold, and it's likely some job offers will be pulled. If you do change jobs, and circumstances at a new employer change, new hires are more likely to be let go. And you may have difficulty finding movers, lodging, etc. If you are let go from a new job, especially after moving, it's probably going to be harder to change course. So, if you need assistance, please contact me, but also try to be understanding if I cannot take on your project. I want my clients to be successful, and if I can't commit the right level of attention to your project, it wouldn't be right to accept it. Be safe, be well, and take time to consider your options.

As the holidays approach, many folks start looking for professional help with their resumes and job search strategies. In the past, times right before Thanksgiving, immediately after Thanksgiving, and again before and after the December break are busy times for job seekers and coaches. Given this, I wanted to let friends, former clients, and followers of my page know that I intend to stop taking new clients the first week of November, for projects that can be completed befor...e the December break. After January 1, my current plan is to only take occasional projects from existing clients, family, and friends. I have begun researching options for my own career direction going forward. When my current office lease is up at the end of April, I will be effectively ending business operations, and Cook Coaching & Consulting will close. I left my job at Penn State 10 years ago this November, to found my coaching practice and reimagine my own life and career. After a decade in business, I have concluded that, while the business is technically profitable for the last few years, it will never meet the financial goals I had for it when I started out, without a much greater investment in time and energy, which I honestly cannot commit. I measure my successes in this business in the relationships I've had with clients, the jobs they've obtained, the graduate and professional schools that admitted them, and the times that folks were able to move forward with a little help from me when they most needed someone to not only care, but dig in and help them figure some things out. Now, it's my time to figure some things out. At similar times in my past, I have found it best to make clean breaks between what I've been doing, and what I want to do. This is one of those times. So I didn't make my goal to raise enough $ to go to the resume writer conference but I decided to continue my special coaching package because a) clients seem to feel it's a good value for the investment and b) I prefer working longer with clients, because honestly, they are more successful when they add coaching, interview coaching or LinkedIn to the mix. I always feel that if I do my job right, I help the client be ready all-around. I'm honestly thinking of getting away fro...m pure document packages to only offer full-range coaching instead. It probably won't change much, since a significant portion of my clientele is repeat clients.
