Summer months are important for The American Heart Association. At the forefront for AHA is the prevention, recognition, and treatment of cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death and illness in our country. Also, of great importance is knowing how to properly respond should a patient, friend, family member, or stranger in your community become a victim of cardiac or respiratory arrest and require resuscitation skills. But, in addition to knowing these resuscitat...ion skills water safety is of the upmost importance this time of year. With more people in the pool, at the beach, and enjoying outdoor activities the chances we will need these crucial skills are obviously more apparent. We train healthcare providers, childcare specialists, personal trainers, educators, and other professionals the guidelines and standards as mandated by the American Heart Association. Everyone should know CPR- including parents and anyone owning a pool We go on site to teach groups or provide a classroom environment to meet your training needs. We also conduct weekly skills check off sessions for those needing that service. Cards are awarded the same day training is completed. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of demise in our country and we can help to spread the word that there are choices we make daily that contribute to this statistic. Encourage others to live a healthy lifestyle each day by eating a heart friendly diet and moving their muscles in some form of exercise, even if it is just by taking the stairs or parking a greater distance from our destination. Some tips for daily healthy choices: Cut all refined sugars and regular so...das Eat more protein such as: low fat or nonfat yogurt (especially Greek), eggs (or egg whites), beans, fish, and lean meats Prepare food by: baking, broiling, grilling, steaming, or poaching Limit salt intake to 2500 mgm or 2.5 grams (1 teaspoon) or less Limit food high in saturated fats (red meats, whole milk, cheeses, processed cakes, pies, cookies) Eat your antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables (four of each) Practice portion control (When eating out take half of the food served home for another meal later.) Have raw almonds or walnuts for a daily snack (A serving fits into the palm of your hand.) Journal your food choices and if there is something you choose to eat that you should not-just take a bite or cut it in half and consume only a portion Drink later--approximately 8 glasses for a female and 10 for a male See more

Fast application of the defibrillator (AED) following a cardiac arrest (victim is not moving, not breathing, and has no carotid pulse) is urgent. Chances for survival are reduced by ten percent for every minute you delay placement of the pads for anaylsis to evaluate for a shockable rhythm. Remember, check responsiveness first-in a scene safe environment. Call for help if patient is unresponsive or has altered level of consciousness. Check for respirations while evaluating ...responsiveness. (Agonal breathing, gasping, is not effective breathing.) Check carotid pulse in adult and brachial in an infant under one year and start compressions is no pulse found in the adult or if pulse under 60 per minute in a child (any one under puberty) at a rate of 100 compressions per minute-fast and hard (two hands at least two inches in adult use one hand for child.) Place the heal of your bottom hand on the lower third of the breast bone or sternum. Use a ratio of 30 compressions to two breaths (head tilt, chin lift in adult and sniffing position in a child) unless there are two responders and the victim is a child and then use a ratio of 15 compressions to two ventilations. Re evaluate the victim after every fifth cycle of compressions/ventilations (about every two minutes.) Apply AED pads as soon as the equipment arrives. Roll patient up onto side quickly if they show signs of regurgitation. See more
