We may be a few days late for National Superhero Day but it's never too late to show gratitude to those who deserve it! ACCUG is teeming with heroes, most of whom do not wear capes. (We have no idea what they do in their spare time!) We are humbled by those whose sole purpose is to ensure ACCUG staff are at their strongest and healthiest both physically and mentally, especially now. So today we'd like to stop and thank the ACCUG Wellness Team. They are dedicated to enhancing... the mind, body and spirit of Athens-Clarke County employees and retirees. The Wellness Team met the challenge of empowering staff to continue practicing safe self-care while they themselves are also learning new norms from remote workstations. Here in the Solicitor's office, Melissa is not only the administrative assistant who is absolutely integral to the flow of our office, but she is also our Wellness Ambassador and liaison. Between working remotely and helping her two children whose school has shifted to home, Melissa makes sure to set aside time for self-care by taking advantage of the live fitness classes the Wellness Team now offers. We are truly inspired by the dedication of all ACCUG staff and are proud to be part of this community!

Here's a new face to the Solicitor's office that some may not have been aware of! David Ian comes to us from Athens-Clarke County Police Department after serving as a police officer for three years. David shifted focus and started Law School with UGA from which he'll graduate May 2020.He started with our office in May 2019 as an intern and has since taken on the role of "assistant solicitor to-be", practicing under the 3rd Year Practice Act. This allows David the opportunity ...to have experiential learning while under the supervision of C.R. and our Assistant Solicitors who are members of the State Bar of Georgia. Since working from home, David's supervision has changed some...but he's working on his current and new cases just as hard! His sweet rescue pup, Khloe, is thrilled to have her parents home, most of all when it's time to de-stress. David and his wife enjoy walking their neighborhood to help keep their mental health strong. Practicing great de-stressing techniques is especially important for them right now - they're expecting their first baby! We couldn't be more thrilled for David, Hannah and their baby girl, Shiloh! Please join us in welcoming David to our office (Hey! It's never too late!) We have all the confidence in David and the rest of our Solicitor staff during these unprecedented times.

Can anyone else believe we've reached the last week of April already? We'll soon be entering May and much of our office is still utilizing their remote work stations. Our Assistant Solicitors are actively reviewing their current cases and all new cases that are still coming in. Their hard work, along with that of the Western Circuit Public Defender's Office and local private attorneys, ensures Athens-Clarke County State Court can continue to address misdemeanor charges in as ...much of a timely manner as we can. Today we're checking in with Assistant Solicitor Ethan Makin, a Pennsylvania transplant who has been with our office since passing the Georgia State Bar in 2016. Ethan is not the only Makin working in our courthouse, his brother is Magistrate Court Judge Ben Makin! From Ethan, I am fortunate to have everything I need to effectively work from home, including plenty of coffee. I have continued to review case files, watch police videos, and communicate with defense attorneys. I really miss my co-workers, colleagues from the defense bar, and the courthouse staff, but I am glad that I still have the ability to serve the citizens of Athens-Clarke County from a distance. Thank you for all you do Ethan!
