I always look at the end grain to determine how rigid, durable or lifetime this wood will offer to my projects. I don't like fast growth lumber.

We have been super busy. Our team has been asked to resupport pre existing iron deck posts. This is where we excel. Our years of structural knowledge and building allows us to have a practical mindset and think spatially to solve issues on homeowners projects. We customize solutions and handle each homeowner as a patient and take care of the projects needs with care. On this current project we worked on a dangerous slope and had to support both a deck and a addition while rem...oving concrete footers. FIRST what was the issue? The builder installed footers that were not set in any form boards. Pouring concrete into a sloped hole does not evenly distribute the load above. We built temp posts to relieve the load above and began to dig under the current footer to investigate why the concrete moved. We found a shallow pour and no rebar. The depth varied from 1 inch to 10 inches. This means the underside was a slope. THE PERMAMENT SOLUTION We spent a great deal of time understanding the problem and talking through some safely guarded techniques to creating new footers under preexisting heavy loads. After agreeing to the strategy we implemented our tasks in a hierarchical order to protect us and the structure. Human life is first above all else. This is dangerous work and should never be done without proven experience. We created our own rebar cages and drive the rebar till we hit solid earth. This meant we needed to buy extra long rebar. Concrete can be self leveling when vibrated and consolidated. This offers a more durable footer and reduces honey combing. We know to always have our footers come above the dirt line by 4 inches minimum. There is more to our techniques but the major takeaway here is to always work with a company can go above the call of duty to make sure quality is first and make sure all necessary items are installed into a footer. Footers are what makes for a solid home. Never cheapen the process.
