Cowboy Guide to Being a Pard We use the term "friend" way too flippantly. If we were to actually categorize the relationships we have with other people, most of... them would be acquaintances, not friends. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being, or having, an acquaintance. But there is something wrong with telling yourself that someone is a friend when they are not. So we here at Save the Cowboy have put together a guide on how to be a friend...or as we like to say, a pard. There are many thoughts on how to recognize a pard, but we can't control other people's actions. So we will focus on how you can be a pard. 1. Being a pard means doing things for other people that you don't even do for yourself...like actually digging a post hole deep enough to hold a post. 2. Being a pard means giving advice that you'd actually follow instead of just giving your opinion. 3. Being a pard means accepting people the way they really are, not how you wish they'd be. 4. Being a pard means learning how to talk with actions more often than you talk with words. 5. Being a pard means developing the skill of teaching and learning with the same ferocity and not being ashamed to do both. 6. Being a pard means being able to share in another's jubilance as well as their rock bottom. 7. Being a pard means that you've found someone else that has your sense of humor...and that is a beautiful thing. 8. Being a pard means choosing whether you are going to be the one that stands out or wimps out. 9. Being a pard means that you know their chores as well as you know your own. (If you don't have any chores, come to the ranch and I'll show you what I mean.) 10. The only way to have a pard is to be one. But one word of advice from the Good Book itself: Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.
