#OnThisDay in 1989 Lawrence Douglas Wilder was elected governor of the state of Virginia, making him the first African American governor of a U.S. state since reconstruction. He officially became Virginia's 66th governor on January 13, 1990. Nathan Phillips is a well-known Native American political activist who was among those leading the Standing Rock protests in 2016 & 2017. He is also the former director of the Native Youth Alliance, which is a group dedicated to upholding Native American culture and spirituality.
