Dahlonega Weather 21.12.2020

And now we are under a watch. Update to come by 10p.

Dahlonega Weather 19.12.2020

Winter storm watches out for basically everywhere NE of here. New update coming out by 10p.

Dahlonega Weather 05.12.2020

Something interesting about today's radar technology is that it is able to detect what type of precip the radar beam is hitting. And looking at that feature on the Atlanta radar shows that the precip over Dahlonega is starting out as snow and just melts on the way down. Now when the radar beam from the ATL Nexrad radar passes our area it's at an elevation of 8400 feet so if you want to see snow...right now...you better find a way to get up that high. Jason

Dahlonega Weather 30.11.2020

Just a quick update. The incoming storm system for late Thursday into early Friday is extremely marginal for snow. It can literally be feast or famine regarding snow Thursday night. Some guidance suggests 2-3 inches while other guidance suggests cold rain. We are walking a razor thin line with this one. By tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) I'm expecting to be able to nail this one down with more specifics. Right now this is where I'm at... Chance of cold rain...100 percent... Chance of rain changing to snow below 2000 feet - 50 percent Chance of rain changing to snow above 2000 feet - 70 percent More to come. Jason

Dahlonega Weather Quick Monday AM Update Just a heads up that I'm keeping a sharp eye on Thursday night for some potential snowfall. An upper level low is expected to track to our south and give us a marginal chance Thursday night into early Friday. This threat is by no means a lock yet but it's also not in fantasy land either. The posted image is from the EURO run last night of estimated snowfall. We are on the fringe of the snow threat in GA (as usual in a marginal sit...uation). The latest GFS from today shows more than this but I'm not convinced of that just yet. Any who enjoy our decent weather until Thursday. More to come as it gets closer. Jason

Dahlonega Weather 18.11.2020

Ahh the joys of COLD RAIN. Precip has arrived and temps are stuck above freezing. Now I'm doubting even the higher elevations see any freezing rain. What's going on in your backyard?

Dahlonega Weather Tuesday PM - Quick Update Just a quick update to reinforce how minor of an event I think this will be. Only the highest elevations above 2500 have a chance at freezing rain in my opinion and even there I don't think it will amount to much. The image posted is the last complete run of the super short range HRRR model which is useful inside of 18 hours of an event. From the posted image of what the radar could look like at 7am Wednesday, you can see that on...ly the highest elevations should be below freezing so for the vast majority of use we get the most common type of Dahlonega winter precip...COLD RAIN. Jason

Dahlonega Weather 08.11.2020

Oh so close! Here is a satellite image from today where you can see where the snow is laying on the ground. Lumpkin county is in the SW area of the image. You have to thank the mountains for blocking the low level cold air to prevent the accumulations Christmas Eve when the rain changed to snow.

Dahlonega Weather 04.11.2020

The NWS has put the shaded areas under a winter weather advisory for freezing rain. Before you get excited the details is in their wording. They are thinking only areas above 2000 feet which eliminates most of Lumpkin County. I'm thinking areas above 2500 feet which is basically just the higher mountains. So that means cold rain for the majority of us. Here is the NWS message...... Dahlonega Weather 19.10.2020

Dahlonega Weather Forecast Update - Monday PM - Winter Weather Alert for Wednesday This is not a test... You read that correctly. We are in store for some good old fashioned Dahlonega winter weather. Let's set the stage.... An upper level trough will be sliding across the SE come Tuesday night. As it reaches our neck of the woods it will spark an area of low pressure to develop off the South Carolina coast. Meanwhile high pressure will be nosing down the eastern side of the Apps creating a wedge of low level cold air coming from our NE. At the same time rain will develop and track north from the Gulf Coast setting the stage for a round winter precip that we all know and love so well. Details... Timing - precip starts after midnight Tuesday and lasts most of the day Wednesday. Amount - probably a half inch or so. Winds - steady winds out of the east. I hope you enjoy our cold and nasty rain. What? Isn't cold rain winter weather? I know it is around here...a lot. Way more than I care for that's for sure. Ok fine...it could start off as a brief period of freezing rain. Even if we do get some freezing rain I don't think it will amount to much more than a novelty of...hey look there is some ice on the mailbox. The only shot of anything more than that is if you live in the higher elevations above 3000 feet. Then Wednesday night there is a small chance of a few snow flurries that shouldn't amount to really anything. The image shared with this post is the latest NAM projected high temps for Wednesday. Yep...mighty cold rain. Anywho, enjoy! Jason
