(For the Lee County Ledger Wednesday) From the ambulance driver chased by Doc Hollywood to Mamma Trish, Mrs. Patricia Hotz MMSc, MN, RN, RRT, NRP, BSN, Program ...Director of Emergency Medical Services and Associate Professor of Emergency Medical Services of Albany State University Darton College, is retiring after more than 40 years of service. She is to receive a Governor’s Award for her distinguished service in the very near future. As a graduate of the EMS program at Darton College in 2011, I have the honor of being known among many Paramedics as a Trish Baby. Is it a coincidence that I’ve seen Michael J. Fox on the cover of a magazine in Publix this weekend and on Good Morning America this Monday morning? Michael J. Fox portrayed the real Doc Hollywood in a movie. It’s about a Hot(z)hot Doctor who becomes smitten with an EMT young lady who alters his life. He breaks down and serves an underserved community and chases that ambulance driver for life. The real Doc Hollywood is Dr. James Hotz, who practices internal medicine in the Lee Medical Arts Center, in our very own Leesburg. I got to meet and converse with him a little while at Trish’s retirement celebration Friday. I grew up hearing, Behind every good man is a great woman. I should be good because my wife is great. But behind this great woman, Trish Hotz, is a great man as well. In her farewell speech, she acknowledged him and thanked him for allowing her to have the career of her dreams. He was there to support her all along the way. I think it’s because he supported her in her career at Darton/ASU that they are still in our community today. It is unquestionable the impact that has had when the paramedics she has trained over 40 plus years here have saved countless lives that touch each of us directly and indirectly. A little bit more about Dr. Hotz that the movie didn’t cover. I asked where he was from. He said northwest Ohio. I said, Really! Where did you go to school? He said, THE Ohio State University. I told him my wife is from Columbus, OH. He went on to tell me that when Woody Hayes, former coach of OSU, had his heart attack, that he would draw blood on him every day. I told him at that time I didn’t like Woody Hayes, the coach who punched the Clemson football player on national TV. He concurred that he had an uncontrollable temper but that at the core he was a true gentleman and decent humanitarian. He saw other celebrities come in and visit like Bob Hope and Jack Nicholson. I asked if I could write about these things. He said I could write whatever I wanted. I told him I write an article for the Lee County Ledger. Then you know Jimmy! Jimmy serves on our board and always comes early and does a conscientious job. He really appreciates Jimmy. I have never called Jim Quinn, publisher of the Lee County Ledger, Jimmy, but then I’m not Doc Hollywood. Dr. Hotz got a little emotional as he spoke with appreciation for Trish during his farewell words for her. He enjoys having his cheerleader at home encouraging him all through life. Trish was a varsity cheerleader for the University of North Carolina. He’s still behind her, chasing that ambulance driver. Trish mentioned how thankful she is that all of their children are physicians, serving in underserved areas in their own careers now. Reminds me of our Great Physician. Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. (Luke 5:31) Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you’ve done it to one of the least of these My brethren, you’ve done it to Me. (Matthew 25:40)
