Dancing Academy. John C. Lege, Professor of Dancing, having opened his Academy in the large Room under Solomon’s Lodge, solicits the attention of Savannah and its vicinity; and from the experience he has had in the School of his father in Charleston, S.C. feels confident that, he will deserve their patronage. Parents wishing to see him will please to call at his Academy between the hours of 10 A.M. and 1 P.M. and 3 and 6 in the evening. Terms five dollars entrance and twel...ve dollars per quarter. J.C.L. will also attend at private houses and give lessons, and give in those Schools which may require his services. Private lessons will be given to gentlemen who are desirous to learn or are disposed to obtain the newest steps. Mr. Lege proposes to establish, should a sufficient number of subscribers offer, weekly Cotillion Parties, to be given at the Exchange. December 7, 1820. See more

1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020. Faith Week. "Strange Moonlight" - Tragic loss was certainly familiar to a favored son of Savannah, Conrad Aiken. At the age of eleven he came home to find his mother killed and his father had committed suicide. This, of course, was a profound influence over the rest of his life, but it didn't define him. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, he portrayed in his writing a certain hopefulness - something intimately reveal...ed in a Strange Moonlight... #conradaiken #historicsavannah #strangemoonlight #historichousemuseum See more

1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020. Faith and Family Week. The photo below appeared in the Savannah Daily Republican on November 16, 1820. It is a ship's arrival notification. The ship's name was "Mary." The captain was "West." It departed from "New York." It took "9" days to arrive in the port of Savannah. Several businesses received cargo including "Maggee & Wright," "Smith & Turner," etc. Passengers of note were "capt. Kelley and family," "J H Oldersha...w and family," "I Davenport and son," etc. "16 others" whose names were not noted were lodged in cabins. "97" people made the voyage in steerage. All of this tells us the Isaiah Davenport came home to Savannah having been away since July and having missed the entire yellow fever epidemic with his pregnant wife, Sarah, and household remaining to manage without him. He took his son. We assume it was Isaiah, Jr. who was five years old. He had two younger sons Benjamin Rush aged 3 and Archibald Clark aged 1. We speculate that Davenport was doing business in New York and beyond and possibly seeing family in Rhode Island/MA. #familyhistory #Davenport #19thcentury #maritime #historichousemuseum #historicsavannah See more

1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020. Faith and Family Week. Isaiah Davenport, Master Builder, left his hometown of Savannah, GA in late July of 1820. He traveled up the eastern seaboard to New York for parts unknown or an unknown reason. Two weeks later is brother Samuel, who was a carpenter in Savannah, died of yellow fever. Isaiah's wife remained in Savannah with her two youngest sons, ages 3 and 1 years. She was four months pregnant. Her responsibilitie...s were managing her new home and household which included 11 enslaved workers including Bella and her four children, Mary, Ann, Ned - who was a carpenter, etc. When Sam Davenport died it is assumed that Davy, the waggoner, came into his brother's household. All this during an epidemic. #reallife #19thcentury #americanhistory #yellowfever #historicsavannah See more

1820 House. Davenport House. October 2020. Faith Week - Family Week. We found this in the March 28, 1820 Savannah Daily Republican. Read it. What does it say to you?... It says to us that: Isaiah Davenport, Master Builder, was renting a house (we don't know where) that he planned to vacate by the end of April. A renter could take possession of the house May 1 and it would be sublet until the first of November. Does that mean the Davenport family was moving into the fine home of Columbia Square at that time? What do you think? #19thcentury #HistoryMystery #historicsavannah #historichousemuseum #myhouse See more

1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020. Faith Week. We cannot forget that citizens who take on the responsibility of public service are asked to secure the common welfare. They are needed to perform this work in a catastrophe when citizens cannot help themselves. Isaiah Davenport was a Savannah alderman during the time of the Great Fire of 1820 (1/11/1820). He was on the committee of alleviation to find aid for those who had lost everything in the conflagration. ...#19thcentury #historicsavannah #historichousemuseum #FireHistory #commongood #publicservice See more

1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020 Fear Week "Fire Bell in the Night" - Missouri Question. Savannahians knew about the intense debate as reported at length in local newspapers. In this episode, the country had its first taste of the controversy that would eventually split the Union and plunge its people into Civil War."... . . . most Americans in 1820 only vaguely comprehended the dreadful potential of the slavery debate. In fact, most were relieved that the difficult question of Missouri had been politically resolved with such an orderly solution. The moral inconsistency of slavery in a free republic, however, remained, and the debate that contemplated that moral question was a monster that in 1819 had stirred but not completely awakened. 1820 House. Davenport House Museum. October 2020. Fear Week. Rev. Pascal Strong tells it. Why is it that famine, war, pestilence and natural disasters are the result of Divine Retribution; while beautiful sunsets, a gentle breeze or a spectacular rainbow are taken for granted? Rev. Paschal Strong had the answer, and on November 17, 1822 he told the entire congregation of Middle Dutch Church in New York City that it was their sinfulness for which such atrocities could be bla...med. Still not feeling guilty? He can help you out with that - in a mere 78 pages of hell, fire and brimstone... #yellowfever #history #preaching #historichousemuseum #19thcentury #museumlife #causes See more
