The Shopping Cart Test? I used to think this too. Until we had kids. When you have little kids (be it one or more), you get them out of a car and carry them or hold their hand to walk into a store. When you get to the store, you get your cart and begin filling it. This is a simple task without kids. But when you’ve got little children, you’re dealing with all the distractions of them asking for things, bothering one another, not staying beside you, etc. Shopping with littl...e kids is NOT easy and more times than not, it’s a mom that is doing this shopping...WITH these kids. So, let’s say you successfully get through shopping and your cart is loaded. You even successfully make it through check-out without a cover-your-face-in-embarrassment child tantrum. Then you push this full cart out to your car. It takes a moment to put all of these items in your car, so you get your kids in the car so you can successfully load the groceries and not have them get hit by other cars. Now you’ve got a big choice! Get the kids back out of the car to walk to the nearest shopping cart corral well they’re already at their short attention span’s wits end. OR leave them in a vehicle alone so you can walk to the corral (knowing a kidnapper could jump in your car or you could trip and bust your head unconscious). OR, find the closest in most secure place to your car that you can prop the cart in hopes another adult (customer or employee) without a child takes responsibility for it quickly. Those are your three choices with kids and I will never look down on a mom with kids for not returning her cart.
