WARNING! LONG POST! I usually don’t waste time on anything my opponent says, but I’ve got time today. So, here we go! My opponent keeps labeling me as PROGRESSIVE followed by some carefully crafted story of how I will not keep you safe. He is nervous about this race, and he has resorted to invoking fear to get you to vote for him. Two things I want to point out: ... 1. I am NOT insulted by being labeled a progressive prosecutor. I am the candidate who will do things a new way. I am PRO-PROTECTING CITIZENS, I am PRO-REHABILITATION, I am PRO-FAIRNESS AND EQUAL JUSTICE, I am PRO-RECONCILIATION between some members of our community and the criminal justice system, I am PRO-SCHOOL AND NOT JAIL for young, non-violent offenders, I am PRO-COMMUNITY, I am PRO-SAVING TAX PAYER DOLLARS by not prosecuting and jailing everything that can walk. When all was said and done, Black people were arrested more often, had higher bail and received harsher sentences even when another race committed a more serious offense. Have you ever stopped to think about WHY Black and Latinx Americans make up a large segment of the prison population? Most people can remember exactly where they were when terrorists attacked our country on September 11, 2001. I was in a small high school classroom when our teacher received a call and immediately turned on the t.v. We all sat together in silence and fear as we watched events unfold. 19 years have passed, and I doubt I will ever forget what I saw. Today, we honor the lives of the victims who were snatched from their families. We honor the heroes who ran to rescue survivors. We also stand proud that we were able to come together in unity as Americans. Let us always remember that we have more in common than we think, and that we are a greater force when we stand together as one.

Two life lessons for today: 1. Always do the right thing! This morning, I met with the Chief and a Lieutenant with the Social Circle Police Department. They do an amazing job working in the community and strengthening relationships between the community and law enforcement. Their mission says it all! I look forward to the possibility of working with them in the future!... 2. Wisdom, hard work, and knowledge go a long ways. I spent quite some time talking to Mr. Albert in Monroe today. He told me about the fact that he is a lifelong Walton County resident. He shared with me his nuggets of wisdom. Including the fact that the yellow dock plant can produce liquid used for medicinal purposes. He even showed me how much water they store! Covid-19 is presenting more challenges beyond just contracting the virus. It is causing yet another chronic issue to thrive: domestic violence. Now that many schools have decided to continue virtual learning (which I fully support), it means that some children will continually be exposed to violence in the home. As District Attorney, I would develop NEW strategies to address domestic violence BEFORE it reaches the District Attorney’s Office. Here are some tips on how you ca...n help as average citizens: 1. Bring increased awareness to the issue. 2. Regularly check on those close to you who may be in relationships where they have been abused. Listen to them, and think of ways you can be helpful. 3. Be smart! Studies show that developing a safety plan for escape is wise the route instead of telling someone to pick up and go. Leaving can be the most dangerous time. 4. If you see something, say something. When you contact police, don’t be silent about what you’ve observed/heard in reference to your abused friend/loved one.
