Obesity is a major problem with children today. We often try to push children to exercise but never look to see if there is something that is preventing them from doing so. Children with flattened feet for example, have discomfort running. Their brains tell their bodies, "i don't like doing this." Having your children structually evaluated will help them reach optimal health and later avoid osteoarthritis.

We are moving buildings with a foundation (feet) and a structural framework (skeletal system). Medicine focuses on our rooms - the heart room, lung room, etc. but what good are pretty rooms if termites are eating at our foundation? when was the last time a physician watched how you walked, stood or functioned. Even when complaining of joint pain you are examined sitting or laying down. Is it any wonder osteoarthritis is the #1 cause of pain and disability?

The longer your foot is on the ground the slower you run. Excessive pronation (rolling in and flattening of the foot) is the primary cause of this. The best way to decrease this is with an optimally corrected foot orthotic. Unfortunately, most aren't. But if they are, nothing, but nothing can create as powerful or immediate improvement like this can.

As physicians we tell patients to move their joints as much as possible...indeed...."use it or lose it." 2 important considerations. First, joints should only be used if properly aligned. Flex and extend your elbow over and over and you generally won't have pain. But use it like a baseball pitcher does and you can easily destroy the joint because you have used it in an abnormal plane. More tomorrow......

As i mentioned yesterday, another indication of tight calf muscles is a wear spot or actual hole on top of your running shoes due to your big toe trying to pick your foot up as you walk.
