ARRRRRRG! We have a whale! (The infamous whale eye and what it means!) The most over looked dog body language (alongside pinned ears), but it is a strong indicator that something isn’t okay! It means that the dog is anxious and/or uncomfortable about something. The dog is very stressed when it shows the whale eye. It can be accompanied by growling, stiff hackles, and even curled lips. It is not okay to continue doing what you were doing (or what something else was doing) wh...en the dog is in this state. You have to figure out what is causing the stress. Is the dog resource guarding? Is the dog crate-stressed? Is the dog dog-aggressive and is showing discomfort in seeing another dog so close? Figure it out and fix it! Scolding the dog won’t do anything, and could actually make it worse (more conflict!). Remember that the dog growling, whale eye’ing, lip curling, etc., is a result of the problem, not the problem itself! See more
