We are wrapping up the last few days of school before the holidays with some fun ideas from Mrs.Radford’s class. We read the book Frosty the Snowman and they did a predictable writing chart where they filled in action words and did a snowman craft. We just wrapped up science units on physical attributes, states of matter, and physical and chemical changes so our snowman craft focused on this- we labeled each snowball as small, medium, or large and talked about how snowmen will melt when hot, Mrs. Radford, Jefferson Academy School, Jefferson City Schools. Thanks Mrs, Radford’s class!!

Communication Matrix training! One of the best tools for assessing emerging communication skills, being presented by a very experienced clinician. I’ll be tuning in!

This morning our young student, in Bartow County Schools, was using Word Power 20 to communicate. He’s just beginning to learn new literacy skills including initial letter recognition. This new skill means he can navigate to new verbs and adjectives on a much more advanced AAC pageset. Here he is only 10 mins in to his introduction to Word Power 60, finding new action words by searching the initial letter of a functional verb. ONE model and then independent use-L for LAUNCH the balloon rocket! High fives to the stellar SLP who’s been working with this smart little fellow to see this wonderful progress!! #augcomm

Today I had the significant pleasure of visiting Mrs. Radford’s classroom in Jefferson City. This room just makes me happy; symbols and visuals everywhere and all of them with a specific purpose; a communication device in almost every student’s hands with an expectation of use IN EVERY ACTIVITY. If you work with students who are minimally verbal and/or emergent communicators, you need the Communication Matrix. Free for now, this is one of our go to assessments for students just beginning to communicate in recognizable ways.
