"Change can be difficult. Anticipated change can be even worse. The leadership of our country is changing dramatically, and some of us are not the least bit happy about it. Some of us are frightened not knowing how it will affect us personally, others see the transition as a loss or a win. Some are still trying to figure out a way to make it all not true, and others are anticipating that the world will be set right again on January 20th. Regardless of how we feel a...bout the governmental changes in our country, the ground is shifting under our feet and all of us feel a little unsteady. What do we do when we feel unsteady? We hang on to something solid and strong so we don’t lose our balance. Sometimes that is the best we can do. Sometimes we just muster up a bunch of good strong faith and optimism and we move forward. We remind ourselves that God’s plan always supersedes ours, and that sometimes we really do have to go with the flow. If we use words like disaster, hate and tragic, we can convince ourselves and those around us including our children that our world is falling apart. If we use our energy in a positive way, and we try not to turn every little thing, even every big thing, into a catastrophe; if we take a minute or an hour, a day, or even a month and see how things unfold, we will likely find out what we have found out every single time our government leadership has changed. Things will not be nearly so awful, nor will they be nearly so wonderful as we thought they would be. One thing we don’t want to do is encourage division and hatred amongst our children. This is a great time to teach them that good people can disagree and still be friends: Friends who work together for the greater good. This is a great time to teach our kids not to believe in any of the caricatures that others create of public figures, recognizing that our leaders are just people with good qualities and flaws just like us. This is a great time to teach our children to be careful of judging before they know, and to remember that once a harsh or cruel word is said, it’s hard to take it back. Patience and a recognition that no matter how it might feel the ground is steady under our feet, because God is running this show, and we should not forget that." See more
