COVID-19 has brought a whirlwind of adjustments, disappointments, grief, and sadly so...much...loss. I try to find the bright spots in moments and there are certainly many to celebrate - a slower pace, sunshine, meals at home together, technology which allows us to connect near and far (and hopefully continue to work), the immense amount of love and dedication of every person on the frontlines making a difference, and much more. . It is okay to take a break in the bright-spot... thinking too though. When working with parents I often talk about a tool from Dan Siegel's book The Whole-Brain Child called Name it to Tame it. The idea is that big feelings can be soothed by acknowledging them, naming them, and then pausing to connect with your child to tell the story of what is upsetting. . So, giving ourselves a chance to FEEL the big feeling and TELL OUR STORY with the support of a loved one is another crucial step. This is an amazing tool to use with children, but essential for us adults too, especially now. . So today I wanted to pass along a resource for you as a parent that can help us Name it to Tame it for ourselves. Take a listen to Brené Brown's new podcast Unlocking Us - I can’t recommend it enough. Seriously. I suggest starting with episode 1 about FFT’s, but from there you can skip around some too. I have always loved Brené Brown's work, but this podcast brings together so much of what many of us need at this moment in time. . Check it out and I’d love to hear what you think. And please feel free to reach out with any questions! . Thinking of each of you and hoping you and yours are safe and well! . https://brenebrown.com/podcast/brene-on-ffts/ See more
