Rest In Peace - - Richard Odum, who served with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for over 24 years, passed away yesterday after a courageous and long ...battle with COVID-19. Lt. Odum had a passion for teaching, mentoring many officers at the department. Upon retirement, he began teaching again, and his last post was as a police academy instructor at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. His family has established a GoFundMe page for contributions: https://www.gofundme.com/f/richard-odum-critical-condition-

BEWARE OF COVID VACCINE SCAMS! While there is high interest in many people obtaining COVID vaccines, there have been reports of people falling victim to online ...or phone scams. You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine. You can’t pay to get early access to the vaccine. You can’t buy a COVID-19 vaccination through the mail, online, or in stores. No one from a legitimate vaccine distribution site will call to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number. Medicare will not call beneficiaries to offer COVID-19 related products, services, or benefit review. For more info on these types of scams please visit: http://bit.ly/GAAttyGenCOVIDScam or http://bit.ly/FBICOVIDVaxScams If you think you have been the victim of a vaccine scam, report it to local police or the FBI (1-800-CALL-FBI). ****Traffic Safety Alert Green, Yellow, and Red Traffic Lights!**** Traffic signals are placed at intersections to control the orderly movement of traffic and to prevent crashes. If a traffic signal is malfunctioning and flashing, drivers must proceed based on the color of the flashing signal they are facing. If the driver is facing a yellow flashing signal, the driver may proceed with caution; if the driver is facing a red flashing signal, the driver must stop and wait until... it is safe to proceed. Green arrow means you may proceed carefully only in the direction the arrow is pointing after stopping for pedestrians and yielding to vehicles within the intersection. In this case you may go straight ahead only. Green arrow, in this case, means you may turn in the direction of the arrow after stopping for pedestrians and yielding to vehicles within the intersection. Yellow arrow may appear after a green arrow and warns you to clear the intersection. Red flashing light means you must stop completely (treat as you would a stop sign). Proceed with caution only after yielding the right-of-way to pedestrians and to other vehicles at the intersection. Yellow flashing light means you must slow down and exercise caution before proceeding through the intersection. A flashing yellow arrow means you may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians (oncoming traffic still has the green light). Be very alert of the flashing yellow light! We are seeing lots confusion at times! Have a safe day everyone! We care about our citizens.

The department would like to announce that Detective Sergeant Scott Marunich has been appointed to succeed Chief Mark Welsh to be effective on January 4, 2021. Sergeant Marunich has 20 years of experience in law enforcement in Elbert County in a variety of positions. He has worked with the City of Elberton for 15 years, and worked with the Elbert County Sheriff for 5 years. He also has experience working under GBI supervision with the North Georgia Drug Task Force. Also, ...Sergeant Marunich has prepared himself for this career advancement over the last several years. He is the only candidate to have pursued a formal education in law enforcement having completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and he will complete his Master’s Degree in Public Safety Administration in 2021. This dedication to his ultimate career goal of becoming Chief is impressive and shows the kind of drive and determination he has in life. As someone who is working on a Master’s Degree, while working a full-time job, the department can attest to the determination that is required to achieve that. Sergeant Marunich is very highly regarded by his peers in leadership positions in the Elberton Police Department. With Chief Welsh leaving after 22 years, we look forward to the transition to the new Chief and wish Chief Welsh a happy retirement after a total of 48 years of service. The department is proud of Sergeant Marunich’s achievements and we look forward to working with him. See more
