Congratulations to our Music Department Class of 2020 graduates! We are celebrating their achievements today since we were not able to have a formal graduation ceremony due to COVID. We started off with a physically distanced faculty sponsored lunch at Victoria Bryant State Park where we were able to get almost all of our grads together for a wonderful time of catching up on each other’s lives. Then several grads joined the Emmanuel College Chorale for a fun rehearsal. ... Still to come is Ethan Weaver’s alumni recital at 7:00 this evening (live-streamed here!) and our graduate celebration where each grad will be recognized, awards will be presented, and we will get to hear a little from each graduate about their current activities and plans. (The celebration itself will not be live-streamed.) Taylor Chapel is all decorated and ready to go! (More pictures to come!)

Ashley Westbrook, the director of Public Relations at Emmanuel College, would like to write a tribute article for the EC website in memory of Mr. Mickey Rowell. Any students, faculty, or alumni who would like to contribute can email their stories and memories to Ashley at [email protected]. Thanks!

As the beginning of the semester is quickly approaching, we want to extend a warm welcome to our new music students and a warm welcome back to our returning music students! It was so wonderful to see some of you on campus today! Just a couple reminders: wear a mask in the music building, knock on professors’ office doors if you need us (we’re available during office hours like always, but may need to mask up before opening the door!), practice physical distancing according t...o posted guidelines, and sanitize, sanitize, sanitize! If we work together, we can have a healthy and successful semester...and an enjoyable one too! This may be a little out-of-context, but this verse stuck out to me during my daily devotions a couple weeks ago: Philippians 2:3-4 says, Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. When I start to grumble about wearing a mask, I remember that with my simple action I’m protecting others. When I want to give someone a hug because I’m glad to see them, I remember that I’m protecting that person by keeping my distance. When I feel upset that this won’t be a totally normal semester, I remember that protecting others is more important than having everything go exactly my preferred way. So keep that mindset as we begin classes on Thursday. Know that the music faculty will be praying for you. Let’s make some music!

A note from Dr. Emma Pettyjohn: Hello all, I hope that everyone is doing well. If you enjoy classical music, I want to invite you to a Facebook Live recital I will be performing on this Thursday evening, June 4th.... Like EC and other colleges, UGA music students who had recitals after spring break were not able to perform their recitals after everything went to online, and they were not allowed to perform their recitals on Facebook either. One of my fellow church members is a flute performance/theory major at UGA who graduated in May and still wanted to perform her senior recital. Since she has access to a collaborative pianist at church (me!), she asked if I would play with her so she could perform her recital, after she graduated! So if you aren’t doing anything Thursday evening, Hannah Peterson’s senior flute recital will be on Facebook Live, from 7-8 p.m. Here is the link, and it is public, so you should be able to view it. https://www.facebook.com/events/241645416899967/ The program is listed on her Facebook page. I hope you enjoy it! Emma Pettyjohn
