A lesson EC alumnus, Trenton Rodriguez ’17 quickly learned in his time as a Worship Director is that talent can only take you so far. Once you reach a certain point in your career, the platform highlights character, it doesn’t build it. For Trenton, he believes his character was built at Emmanuel College in the School of Christian Ministries, and the professors who took time to pour into his life. Currently, Trenton serves as the Worship Director for Coastal Community Chu...rch. What advice would he give to students interested in worship ministry? I would say find a mentor in a thriving church, he said. You need to find someone that has more experience than you and is doing more than you are currently able to do. You’re going to want to find someone who has built a worship team and preached a time or two. Find someone who has great connections and figure out how they made them. In the classroom, you’ll learn what the word of God says and how to interpret scripture, but as far as finding someone in ministry to learn from, you’ll have to go out and find that person yourself." Trenton encouraged college students to not get discouraged, even if they feel like they’ve dropped the ball. College is both an incredibly difficult time in your life, but it will never be easier at the same time, he said. With that being said, it doesn’t disqualify the pain you may be going through or the stress you may be feeling. Don’t beat yourself up if you drop the ball a time or two, keep your head up! When EC alumna, Jennifer Rhodes was in second grade, she remembered watching her teacher and thinking, I want to be her one day. Today, that dream has become a reality. A 2002 Middle Grades Education graduate of Emmanuel College, Jennifer looks back on her time at Emmanuel knowing that is where her faith was shaped. ... I believe that you could attend college anywhere and have the academic portion, Jennifer said. But the spiritual component is what is most needed. You can’t find that everywhere. After spending several years in the classroom, Jennifer now serves as an Education Associate at the South Carolina Department of Education, in their office of Federal and State Accountability. Outside of education, Jennifer and her husband Brian, (EC Class of '99 and '01) have served in ministry together for 18 years. As a 21-year-old student at Emmanuel, Jennifer would have never thought God would lead her down the path that he has, but he did. What advice would Jennifer give to other aspiring teachers? Never say never, she said. Never say you won’t do something, always leave your life open to the guiding of the holy spirit because his plans are greater than yours. Congratulations to Emmanuel alumnus, Ray Crook who was recently hired as the Vice President and Senior Credit Officer for The Heritage Bank!
