For context, in America 20% of transgender adults are uninsured compared to the general population where only 8% didn’t have health insurance in 2019. The study also noted that among insured respondents more than one in five reported that their claims for gender-affirming hormones were denied. This is exactly why we exist. Until our system of delivering care, care we believe is a right of all human beings, is centered by ethics and justice, insurance companies can make dangerous and disabling decisions about what does and does not count as covered services. Gender-affirming care that is not just tolerant but is celebratory of the wide spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations is life-saving.
