**Advice and help wanted** Too long, didn't read: Family member revealed to me they are vax hesitant despite being a health care worker, what's the best way to... try to change their mind and has anyone been able to change vax hesitant people's mind -------------------------------------------------------------- Hiya, thanks for accepting me into this group. I need help and thought an online community like this would be the ideal place to get it. To cut to the chase, I just found that someone in my family is anti-Vax (or maybe strongly Vax-hesitant) and I'm shocked and upset about this - especially as this person is a health care worker with nearly 30 years experience as an NHS Nurse. (I'm from Scotland) Their remit right now is working in the Intensive Care Unit literally providing one to one care for Covid-19 patients, many of whom are on ventilators and such. I'd never known about these views until a phone call last night where they told me to "remember its [my] own choice to get a Covid vaccine and no one can force [me] to get one. Remember to weigh up all pros and cons." I was like "???? Cons??? Of a vaccine??? You don't believe in those mad conspiracy theories do you?" However, it sadly turns out that they are indeed against vaccines on a personal level. Apparently hasn't had a vaccine since they were 15 despite now being in their 50s. I couldn't believe such an educated and experienced health care professional would be hesitant about getting a vaccine when they work on the front line and see day to day the effects it has on people. Why I need help is I am hopeful that they change their mind and they get the vaccine for so many reasons. Vaccines obviously work and this person has a job where they'll be nearer the front to get the vaccines and almost all of their colleagues will be getting one quickly. They also are in contact with their elderly mother who is in her mid to late 80s. I've been reading online about the best ways to approach vax hesitant people to try and remind them of the science. I myself would say I am quite a dogmatic person and strong in my beliefs - after looking online I now see my initial reaction was not the best approach to this so I know I need to be a bit more understanding of their fears. This person has never once shared anti vax sentiment before but I am worried that if i start pushing for them to get a vaccine they will dig their heels in more rather than listen to me. Has anyone in this group ever successfully got a Vax hesitant person to U-turn on their beliefs? How did you do so? Any tips and advice? From experience, what are the tips to do and not to do here? As far as I can understand, this person's vaccine fears came from reading Dean Koontz when they were 15. I didn't know who that was (sorry to any Koontz fans) but so I thought he was an anti vax conspiracy theorist, but it turns out he is a novelist so I don't quite get the jump from Koontz novel to anti vaccinations (if anyone can enlighten me that would be great) Other than that I didn't get any real answers about why they were anti vax other than "lots of people think this way." I spent hours last night reading documents, articles and watching Ted Talks on this, but if anyone can help with their own experiences that would be great. I know this is a long post, and I am partially venting, but any advice here would be amazing as I am determined to change this person's mind on vaccines, even if the chance of that is minimal.
