Dear Customer, It is a new year, and with it comes ever more sophisticated cyber-crime. Invoice fraud is on the rise, and the FBI has recently issued warnings about a specific scheme known as Business Email Compromise (BEC). BEC targets American businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. Scammers compromise email acc...ounts through social engineering or hacking in order to fraudulently direct electronic fund transfers to their own accounts. A common form of the scheme involves the criminal gaining access to the company’s network through a phishing attack, then spending weeks or months studying the organization’s billing and invoicing habits, as well as style of communication. The scammers strike by sending a phony email, purportedly from a familiar contact, to an employee, directing the employee to make an immediate wire transfer to a trusted vendor. However, the account to which the employee directs the funds does not belong to the legitimate vendor, but to the scammers. BEC affects companies of all sizes throughout the country, and it is important that you remain vigilant to protect your company against this type of fraud. Remind your employees , especially those in the finance department, to verbally confirm a wire transfer request before making the transfer. Create a rule for external emails so that look-a-like email addresses will be flagged as coming from outside the company. And it might be time for a refresher training on phishing techniques for your employees so the scammer doesn’t access your network in the first place. After all, the best offense is a good defense. If your company is victimized by BEC, contact your financial institution immediately, and report the crime to the FBI.
