Refunds Held for Those Claiming EITC or ACTC Until Mid-Feb By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting on Feb. 27, 2018, if direct deposit was used... and there are no other issues with the tax return. This additional period is due to several factors, including the Presidents Day holiday and banking and financial systems needing time to process deposits. This law change, which took effect at the beginning of 2017, helps ensure that taxpayers receive the refund they’re due by giving the IRS more time to detect and prevent fraud. See more

2018 Tax Filing Season Begins Jan. 29, Tax Returns Due April 17

As a reminder, electronic filing of 2013 tax returns ended on November 30, 2016. The IRS is not processing 2013 tax returns that were transmitted after November 30th. If you have electronically filed any 2013 tax returns after November 30, 2016 those returns will not be acknowledged by the IRS and must be mailed by April 18, 2017 in order to claim a refund. Taxpayers who have not filed their 2013 tax returns have until April 18, 2017 to claim a refund for their 2013 taxes. If the taxpayer applied for an extension of time to file their 2013 tax return, the deadline is extended to October 17, 2017. Currently, the IRS supports electronic filing of 2014, 2015 and 2016 tax returns only. In order to claim a refund for a 2013 return, the return must be mailed and postmarked on or before April 18, 2017.

JUST IN: Message from the State of Georgia Direct Deposit of Refunds With an increase in fraudulent requests for direct deposit refunds, the Georgia Department of Revenue has changed our direct deposit policy. Starting this year, first time filers and those who have not filed in 5 or more years will not receive a direct deposit. We will automatically issue a paper check.

JUST IN: Where’s My Refund? will be updated on Feb. 18 for the vast majority of early filers who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. Before Feb. 18, some taxpayers may see a projected deposit date or an intermittent message that the IRS is processing their return. By law, the IRS is required to hold EITC and ACTC refunds until Feb. 15. However, taxpayers may not see those refunds until the week of Feb. 27. Due to differing timeframes with financial institutions, weekends and the Presidents Day holiday, these refunds likely will not start arriving in bank accounts or on debit cards until the week of Feb. 27 -- if there are no processing issues with the tax return and the taxpayer chose direct deposit.

A student can check with the educational institution. However, this link from the Department of Education, http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/, shows all accredited schools. If your school is found using this link, then it is an eligible institution and you can claim the American opportunity tax credit.

Did you know that taxpayer may not claim the Earned Income Credit for a child if the child has not lived with taxpayer for over half the year, even if taxpayer have supported the child?
