Here to tell you more about her journey with running and the Loran Smith Center is Margaret McDonald. Margaret is a music teacher at Gaines School Elementary and always a bright smile running down the sidewalk! In the last year, how has your activity (running/walking) routine changed?... My activity routine has changed a lot over the past year. I had just run a half marathon right before the pandemic started and when everything shut down I took about 6 months off from running. I started walking some over the summer and when the school year started I took up running again. I've been working on getting faster and I hope to start getting my distance back up soon. How has that change impacted you? Starting to run again has helped me a lot. I've been generally happier, less nervous about the pandemic, and in a better mood. Have you even participated in the In Their Shoes event before? I participated in In Their Shoes in 2019 and 2020. Each time I walked it with a group of friends. What is your favorite resource that the Loran Smith Cancer Center offers to people? My favorite resource that the Loran Smith Center offers are the support groups. I have gone to the breast cancer support group most every month since I was diagnosed. I have made some good friends in this group and I've really appreciated being able to connect with others who understand what I have been through. What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is facing great adversity? Surround yourself with people who will support you through your adversity. Here to tell you more about why an exercise routine and the Loran Smith Center are important Tammy Tate Gilland, the Executive Director of Philanthropy at Piedmont Athens Regional. 1) In the last year, how has your activity (running/walking) routine changed?... Over the past year, my running and walking mileage increased. It’s great to have an early morning exercise partner who holds me accountable. We have participated in several virtual races but look forward to returning to in-person runs very soon. 2) How has that change impacted you? The increase in exercise helped me to lose some weight for my daughter’s wedding and keep it off. Good-bye fat clothes! 3) Have you even participated in the In Their Shoes event before? I got involved with In Their Shoes in 2007. I was working at the University of Georgia and organized a team called the Diva Dawgs. We were the top fund raising team that year. In 2008, I was asked to be the In Their Shoes Training Coach. I scheduled week day and weekend training walks. I loved meeting the participants and hearing how the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support had positively impacted their lives. 4) What is your favorite resource that the Loran Smith Cancer Center offers to people? I love that the Center offers cancer support groups. I feel it’s so important for cancer patients to know they are not alone in their cancer journey. They need a warm and welcoming environment where they can share their concerns and celebrations. 5) What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is facing great adversity?
