Very hot this weekend and all of next week. These temperatures are especially dangerous for short nosed breeds. Stay with your pets when you let them out, and keep a large container of water outside for them to drink from. If they show any sign of distress, such as panting, get them back inside and cool them down. If you find your dog collapsed, apply cool water to the back of the neck and back until the body temperature is 103-104, then stop the cooling. Remember that the worst part of overheating can come days after as internal bleeding, and may be fatal even when the heat was not. It's springtime, even though the calendar says we have a few more weeks of winter. That means it's time to clean up any debris in your yard that can harbor snakes. It is equally important to keep your grass mowed to make the yard inhospitable to snakes. Apparenly, hawks love to eat snake, and closely kept lawns allow hawks to spot the slithery creatures.
