Here are a few videos of the video of our show. (The actual video is great, and it will be delivered to everyone this week!)
Gillian is a seven-year-old girl who cannot sit in school. She continually gets up, gets distracted, flies with thoughts, and doesn't follow lessons. Her teach...ers worry about her, punish her, scold her, reward the few times that she is attentive, but nothing. Gillian does not know how to sit and cannot be attentive. When she comes home, her mother punishes her too. So not only does she Gillian have bad grades and punishment at school, but she also suffers from them at home. One day, Gillian's mother is called to school. The lady, sad as someone waiting for bad news, takes her hand and goes to the interview room. The teachers speak of illness, of an obvious disorder. Maybe it's hyperactivity or maybe she needs a medication. During the interview an old teacher arrives who knows the little girl. He asks all the adults, mother and colleagues, to follow him into an adjoining room from where she can still be seen. As he leaves, he tells Gillian that they will be back soon and turns on an old radio with music. As the girl is alone in the room, she immediately gets up and begins to move up and down chasing the music in the air with her feet and her heart. The teacher smiles as the colleagues and the mother look at him between confusion and compassion, as is often done with the old. So he says: "See? Gillian is not sick, Gillian is a dancer!" He recommends that her mother take her to a dance class and that her colleagues make her dance from time to time. She attends her first lesson and when she gets home she tells her mother: "Everyone is like me, no one can sit there!" In 1981, after a career as a dancer, opening her own dance academy and receiving international recognition for her art, Gillian Lynne became the choreographer of the musical "Cats." Hopefully all different children find adults capable of welcoming them for who they are and not for what they lack. Long live the differences, the little black sheep and the misunderstood. They are the ones who create beauty in this world.
So sad to see a local small business close.

In this video, Mme. Canterna shares her experience on how her heightened coordination set her apart from others as a professional dancer. She emphasizes that t...he quick connection between mind and body is essential and it is much more important than physical attributes such as hyper extended legs or flexibility. Hope that helps!

Next time your young dancer complains about barre work and class, show them the incredible beauty of these pros, just doing a simple barre overlooking the Seine. Our bodies are the instrument, it takes time, effort, repetition, and time to develop an artist. :)

Reposting this to make it shareable: In one of the "closed teacher groups", a discussion was started on how social media and TV shows like Dance Moms and SYTYCD... have made our jobs as teachers so much harder, with students and their families wanting more and more "tricks" etc. I thought I'd share my response here to allow dancers and their families (not only teachers) join this discussion, as this is something that has been on my mind a lot lately, and I think that the dancers' and the families' input are really valid here. I agree that dance has changed and I agree that it has gotten harder. Much of what the kids see on social media and TV contributes to the problem. The level of technical prowess keeps getting higher and higher and so many of us are shouting about the loss of artistry. I have stuck to my guns and teach the way I feel my students should be taught. I can't make a dancer. The student either IS a dancer or the student IS NOT a dancer, I can only guide the way and provide the tools for their growth. And one of those tools is learning about the PROCESS of studying dance...and I've talked about this a lot in these threads. I am not a teacher who hates tricks. I can be thrilled by a stunning technical feat. But not when it is just a vulgar display of prowess. So here's my question: Why does it have to be either or? Why do we have to abandon artistry when the technical level gets higher? Why can't we teach our students to be growing, evolving expressive artists AND have a brilliant technique? And why are teachers/choreographers building numbers around the tricks? It is so obvious to me when a piece is constructed this way. Those tricks can really ENHANCE a beautiful piece of choreography, when they are used to highlight or underline a moment in the piece, or express something in the music, rather than displaying some nicely done fouetté turns to impress a panel of judges. Has anyone ever seen a piece of professional choreography from a respected choreographer (other than a coda in a 19th Century Pas de Duex) where fouetté turns are performed for their own sake? So why are giving this sort of choreography to our students? Even at the recreational level, we all hope that some of our students will progress and go on to a career. Why aren't we preparing them for that career? Because fouetté turns, over split grand jetes, scissor leaps and something called "a Scorpion" (which I had to google to find out what it was, and which I have NEVER seen on a professional stage) WILL NOT get these dancers a job. And that's a simple fact. So while we are teaching higher level tricks, we should be helping to mold artists and teach them how and when to use these tricks to IMPROVE a piece of choreography rather then building a number around them. I have a friend who produces the European tours of many shows running on Broadway. He also, teaches acting to teens. One of the things he once said to me as I started my teaching career was "If you bring something to the classroom that is REAL QUALITY, the kids will know it, and they will get it. About three months ago I was at Steps in NYC taking class (yes, I still take class) and there was a boy next to me at the barre (he was about 16 years old). At the end of the barre, as we were carrying the barres out of the way, he said to me "Wow, I've never seen presence like that during a BARRE". And that is because no one ever taught it to him. We shouldn't be giving kids and their families what they want. We should be opening a door and SHOWING them what they want. We are TEACHERS.
