This Week in Vann House History [This transcription from the records of the Moravian Mission in Springplace is presented verbatim as part of the historical record and includes historical materials that may contain negative stereotypes or language reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place including terminology that may not be deemed appropriate today. No disrespect is ever intended by modern-day staff of the Chief Vann House Historic Site.] Ooyugillogy..., C.N., Dec. 13, 1830 Dear Sister, We are desirous of expressing thankfulness to the beloved members of the Female Missionary Society of Salem for the useful donation they forwarded to us by Br. Byhan for the benefit of our poor Indian scholars. For this purpose I beg leave to address these few lines to you, as the corresponding Secretary of that worthy society; and in order to contribute my mite toward keeping alive the kind interest you have evinced in this portion of our Lord’s work among the poor heathen, I will endeavor to give you some information about our school, which I must confess, is so interesting to us, that we forget in a manner the difficulties & fatiguing labours which are connected, unavoidably, therewith. That the school is exclusively for girls you are aware of. We have at present 13 with us constantly; besides these there are about 4 at home on a visit. The most of them entered school within two years, and we have at length the satisfaction to have several readers among them. Others are making progress in spelling & writing. Sr. Copeland instructs them every afternoon in sewing, knitting, & marking. The unhappy political situation of the Nation presents many discouraging aspects to our views. The efforts of the Missionaries are paralyzed to a considerable extent in consequence thereof, & yet even under these circumstances we have manifold proofs of the neverceasing attention of our merciful Lord & Savior to the sighs and prayers of His people. To Him we recommend our distressed people, and to Him alone we look under the manifold trials incident to our pilgrimage. Give our Love to all the beloved Sisters composing your Missionary Society & remember us in your prayers to Him who on the great day, when people & realms of every tongue shall stand before Him, shall welcome those who gave to the poor with the cheering salutation, What you have done to one of these little ones, you have done to me, etc. May our dear Savior accompany the laudable efforts of your Society with His blessing & increase your numbers to still greater efficiency. I remain your affectionate fr. & Brother. Henry G. Clauder Miss Louise C. Kramsch Corresponding Sec. of the Female Missionary Society [Pictured: Schoenbrunn Village Schoolhouse - near present-day New Philadelphia and founded in 1772 as a Moravian mission among the Delaware Indians.]
