Our office will be closed December 24th and 25th as well as December 31st and January 1st. COVID-19 spreads easily whether gatherings are large or small. We encourage you to celebrate the holidays with those in your immediate household to protect yourself and others. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, you have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should NOT attend any gatherings until after your quarantine ends.... We wish everyone a HAPPY and SAFE Holiday!!

A poll conducted by @acatoday found that more than 90 percent of respondents said their patients or people they knew were experiencing more musculoskeletal issues since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Feel better; get #ActiveAdaptive handsdownbetter.org/NCHM

"Many of us haven’t just changed where we work; we’ve also changed how we work. We no longer walk down the hall for a meeting, dart across the street for a coffee, or even walk to the subway for a commute. Instead we just sit." One easy way to help minimize strain on your eyes, neck and low back is to get up and move every 20 minutes. It doesn't mean you have to go for a 10 minute walk. Just do the opposite of the shape you were just in! For example, sitting working on a laptop = standing, arms by your side or back behind you, chest open and looking up toward the ceiling with eyes focusing on something that's further than a few feet in front of you.

There is emerging evidence that COVID-19 is a vascular disease. In a paper published in April in the scientific journal The Lancet, a team of scientists discovered that COVID-19 can infect the endothelial cells that line the inside of blood vessels. Endothelial cells protect the cardiovascular system, and they release proteins that influence everything from blood clotting to the immune response. In the paper, the scientists showed damage to endothelial cells in the lungs, he...art, kidneys, liver, and gut in people with COVID-19. Sure it starts in the receptors of the respiratory system, but once there, it can get into the blood stream and affect any tissue in the body...HELLO COVID TOE!! Doctors have continually been baffled by thousands of tiny strokes or blood clots in patients old and young which is not a hallmark of influenza virus or other coronaviruses. Blood vessel damage could also explain why people with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease are at a higher risk for severe complications from a virus that’s supposed to just infect the lungs. This means that virtually anyone presenting to a doctors office or hospital feeling ill could have coronavirus and that further and faster testing (beyond a simple nasal swab) could be necessary to form a complete action plan. https://www.thelancet.com//PIIS0140-6736(20)30937/fulltext

A newly published study found no beneficial effect on either cardiovascular disease (CVD) or death of lowering saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake AND that saturated fat intake is actually protective against stroke. This reassessment of dietary saturated fat intake was based on a meta-analysis of randomized control trials (the strongest data available), as well as observational studies. Bottom Line: "Whole-fat dairy, unprocessed meat, eggs and dark chocolate are SFA-rich foods with a complex matrix that are not associated with increased risk of CVD. The totality of available evidence does not support further limiting the intake of such foods. https://www.onlinejacc.org///2020/06/16/j.jacc.2020.05.077

I don't have the words that others have so eloquently stated and I don't have the experience to help lead a revolution. I do have the ability to be an ally and stand beside those that do during this very dark time. So, instead, I'll donate. Below is the link for #BLM. Instead, I'll educate myself on issues outside of and surrounding my whiteness. Currently listening to "So You Want To Talk About Race" by Ijeoma Oluo. "White Fragility" by Robin DiAngelo is next. If documentaries are your thing, "I Am Not Your Negro" directed by Raoul Peck comes highly recommended. Instead, I'll vote at every opportunity to support candidates who will do the hard work of lifting black and brown communities up and ending white supremacy. Instead, I'll listen.

WE'RE OPEN! But there are some changes outlined below that will slightly alter your experience at the clinic temporarily because your safety and well-being are my highest concerns. Please, if you have a dry cough, chills, shaking, new loss of taste or smell, headache or muscle pain that is combined with any of the prior symptoms, DO NOT come in to the office. You need to alert your primary care physician so they can coordinate further action and testing. CHANGES TO OFFICE...Continue reading

Happy Monday everyone. Wow...what a couple of weeks! Here's where things stand with the office. I am continuing to make myself available to established patients who have acute, severe or worsening conditions. The stay at home order which Georgia is currently under does not apply to chiropractors or their appointments as they are considered essential under state guidelines. Regardless of the guidelines, I still want to limit the number of patients seen so if it can wait, I... sincerely appreciate your patience. Please email the office or message me in Patient Ally for the fastest response should you require one of these appointments. If you answer YES to any of the following questions, we probably need to wait a little longer to ensure the safety of everyone. *Do you have fever or cough? *Have you traveled ANYWHERE in the US or abroad in the last 14 days? *Have you had close contact with a person who has traveled anywhere in the past 14 days or is known/presumed to be COVID-19 positive? If you are seen in the office, I am disinfecting all surfaces with isopropyl alcohol (70% solution) prior to and after patient appointments. You will be the only patient that is seen at that time as no one will be waiting in the reception area. I am also wearing a face covering and request you do the same for the duration of the appointment. The surgeon general just came out with a handy tutorial (click below) and the CDC's website for several "sew" and "no sew" options. Kyla will continue to work from home so that she may keep her family safe. If you have any questions for either one of us, please don't hesitate to reach out. Please continue to wash your hands, keep your distance and do what you need to in order to stay sane and calm during this time. Remember to be kind to yourself and others as this is a very challenging thing that we're all going through. It is through the strength of our individual decisions and community that we WILL get through this. I look forward to us ALL putting this behind us as soon as we safely can. I'll be in touch with updates as the come and thank you all for your continued support. ~Dr. Shuman https://www.ozarksfirst.com//BHDN_NA-16SA_COVID_-SURGEON-G
