We congratulate Mercedes Ball, our Sister2Sister Mentoring Program's Executive Director, for executing another successful Health Fair on Saturday, November 14th at the Dunbar Neighborhood Center in the Mechanicsville community. For the fourth year in a row, the GABWA Foundation collaborated with the Center for Black Women's Wellness, Inc to host the health fair. This year, the health fair served 373 people - our largest number ever! This work is so important, and that can... be seen by the fact that we were able to provide 30 women with FREE clinical breast exams. This year, each of those 30 women had to be referred for additional services and testing. As Mercedes said, "That means we were able to stand in the gap, and provided critical and potentially life altering medical assessments for 30 women." This is why we do the work! It is humbling, that as an organization that we get to do this type of work, because it is critical to us changing our communities, one life at a time! This is the type of work that our Founders envisioned GABWA doing, when in 1981, they created an organization that would, among its three founding principles, focus on women and children’s issues. The GABWA Foundation is happy to announce that the Health Fair will now be a standing program of the GABWA Foundation. Like our Sister2Sister, Scholarship, and Civil Pro Bono programs, the Health Fair will be a signature program of the Foundation. Thank you to the volunteers, the Board of Directors, everyone who attended, our providers, and of course, the Center for Black Women's Health. #GABWAfoundation #GABWA

This year, the GABWA Foundation awarded $36,000 in scholarships to nine deserving African American female students attending Georgia law schools! All six of the Georgia law schools were represented by smart, dynamic, tenacious, bold, community service minded young women. Our scholarships ensure that the pipeline of women entering the legal profession remains strong. Since 2002, the GABWA Foundation has awarded nearly $400,000 in scholarships. Additionally, we honored the me...ntees and mentors in our Sister2Sister Mentoring Program. The program is designed to assist at-risk teen girls, many of whom have entered the juvenile court system, through adult mentoring and bimonthly meetings covering important topics such as abstinence, self-esteem, goal setting, and choices. The Sister2Sister program has mentored over 1,000 young ladies, many of whom have risen above their circumstances to attend and graduate from college. Finally, we recognized the volunteers in our Civil Pro Bono Wills Project (the Wills Project). The Wills Project focuses on providing legal and educational assistance to the marginalized in our society. We provide wills and advanced healthcare directives to individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS, and other terminal illnesses; and through our partnership with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, we provide wills and health directives to elder adults throughout Georgia, regardless of health status. Our Words of Inspiration were delivered by our 2006 President, Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Kimberly Esmond Adams, who reminded us that we are strong; we are resilient; we are brilliant; we are powerful; we are smart; we are leaders...we are Black women! Thank you to everyone who attended the brunch, the Glitter Gala & Auction, volunteered, and supported the Foundation this year. We look forward to your continued support in 2018, as we celebrate our 35th year, and kick-off our 35 in 35 Giving Camoaign! A special thank you is extended to our brunch host, King & Spalding LLP, Lisa N. Collins, and to Maria Banjo for designing our invitation, program, and presentation. And, to the 2017 GABWA, Inc.
