At long last, we are pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Cpl. Jonathan Ayers Memorial Scholarship. We were pleased this year to be able to offer two scholarships to our essay writers. Joshua Walker - graduated from Walnut Grove High School as a member of the class of 2020. He will be attending the University of Georgia this fall studying International Affairs, Economics, and foreign languages. Josh is also interested in law school and wants to one day work for either ...the U.S. Department of State or the United Nations. Clara Mitchell - Is an honor graduate from Walnut Grove High School, class of 2020. Clara will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall, and she plans to pursue a degree in Biology with an area of emphasis in Marine Biology. She enjoys spending her free time reading, drawing, hiking, swimming, kayaking, and spending time with friends. About the Scholarship: Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers 24, of Snellville, GA was 1 of 9 heroes who fell in the heat of battle while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Cpl. Ayers died of wounds suffered when their outpost was attacked by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades from enemy forces in Wanat, Afghanistan, on July 13, 2008. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy. The American Legion Riders of Loganville Post 233 are proud to provide the Cpl. Jonathan Ayers Memorial Scholarship. This annual scholarship is endowed from monies raised by the Legion Riders of the Loganville post and will benefit a deserving student or students from Walton or Gwinnett Counties with a $1000.00 scholarship.
