This weekend, Christina Burgess will graduate with a biomedical engineering degree from Georgia Tech. In 1981, her father, David Burgess, graduated with a degre...e in electrical engineering. 40 years later, Mr. Burgess still remembers visiting Tech’s campus as a 5th grader. That day, his teacher told him ‘One day, I believe that you’re going to go to this school.’ And, that stuck with him when he enrolled years later. Today, Mr. Burgess is immeasurably proud of his daughter - who followed in his engineering footsteps - for her drive and achievements. Christina graduates with highest honors, and already has a full time job working as a research and development engineer at Procter & Gamble. #RamblinOn #GT21 #HelluvaEngineer P&G Wallace H. Last month, the Graduate Affairs Office hosted their annual Meme Competition Event to celebrate Graduate Student Appreciation Week. Students enjoyed noshing on food from Yumbii and King of Pops, socializing in the sunshine, and of course, voting on their favorite student-generated memes. Congratulations to the following meme creators on their winning memes: First place: Anup Chandora ... Second place: Tohid Shekari Third place: Kion Fallah See the winning memes in the last photo.
Graduating senior Shivani Mehrotra started out as a biomedical engineer on a pre-med track but changed course after a summer of exploration. She worked as a student assistant for the CREATE-X program and instantly fell in love with hardware development. That summer catapulted me towards strategy, innovation, and hardware product developmentI haven't looked back since! said Shivani. When asked what advice she would give future ECE students, she said, Take time to explore ...and pursue your passions unapologetically. In parallel, challenge yourself to try things you may not succeed at because that’s truly where growth happens. Lastly, celebrate the wins and grieve the losses. At Tech, it’s easy to get caught up in your own checklist or be in a perpetual work mode, so it’s important to take time for yourself and really soak in the all the experiences you’re going through!" After graduation, Shivani will be joining Texas Instruments in their prestigious FAST Rotation Program on the Technical Sales Track. #gt21 #helluvaengineer

Four ECE alumni have established a co-development studio founded by Black technologists to assist the community with opportunities in S.T.E.A.M." LaVonda Brown (M.S.E.E. ’12, Ph.D. ECE ’15), Troy Nunnally (M.S.E.E. ’09, Ph.D. ECE ’14), Nashlie Sephus (M.S.E.E. ’10, Ph.D. ECE ’14), Ivan Walker (Ph.D. ECE), and four other founders created KITT (Knowledge, Information, Technology, Tools) Labs as a space for Black tech talent to work, collaborate, and learn. A paper written by ECE Associate Professor Chuanyi Ji and her colleagues has been considered among past and present editors’ favorite papers published in Nature Energy in the last five years. To mark the fifth anniversary of the publication, these editors shared summaries and commentaries on this and eight other papers in the January 2021 issue. In Dr. Ji's paper, she and her team analyze data from four major service regions representing Upstate New York, both during normal operations and Super Storm Sandy, which took place in fall 2012. We feel pretty lucky to count Joe Luck (E.E. '14, M.S.E.E. ' 17) as an ECE alumnus. His time mentoring middle students in STEM while in the military led him to pursue electrical engineering. Now he works with Texas Instruments as a technical sales representative. #amazingalumni

The next generation of cellular technology doesn't just mean a cooler phone with faster applications, 5G will revolutionize how people, services, and devices are connected. Applications like enhanced virtual reality and gaming, smart cities, fleets of self-driving cars, and remote surgeries will take root and flourish with 5G. In the latest episode of the Uncommon Engineer Podcast, ECE associate professor Matthieu Bloch talks about the history of cellular network standards and where the future will take us. Researchers in the School of ECE have discovered that flexible large-area organic photodiodes can now compete in performance with conventional silicon photodiode technology. They have distinct advantages for applications such as biomedical imaging and biometric monitoring that require detecting low levels of light across large areas.
