4/26 UPDATE: Water level dropped, bridge has been inspected & SR 206 Connector has reopened. Douglas/Coffee Co road alert: GDOT has closed the SR 206 Connector to through traffic between US 221/SR 135 and US 441/SR 31 due to water over the Seventeen Mile River bridge. GDOT is on scene. Maintenance personnel hope the water level will begin to fall overnight. GDOT will have to inspect the bridge before it can reopen. We'll let you know when that happens. You may notice some activity on I-75 starting tomorrow, Feb. 21, as a contractor begins a project to replace all the signs, from the Ga/Fla line to Farmers Market Rd in Crisp Co. This does not include the blue service signs. The contractor will start on the northbound side. Right now this will close only the shoulder where signs are being replaced. At some point the large, overhead signs and structures will be replaced. That will cause traffic interruptions, but we'll let you... know in advance. This is being done because some signs are old and some are even missing. There will also be a change in the mile markers, which will be placed every two-tenths (0.2) of a mile. It will help law enforcement, drivers and CHAMP operators more accurately pinpoint their location. In areas of the interstate that have barrier wall, the mile markers will be installed on top of the wall. Wondering what's going on in Colquitt Co. on US 319/SR 35 @ 4th Avenue? A dump truck operator drove through the intersection with the bed in the upright position. Apparently the operator had just washed out the bed. The bed pulled down the traffic signals. Our district signal folks are also having to set temporary poles. If this abandoned trailer belongs to you, we'd like a word. GDOT got a call around 9 pm Tuesday (last night) because a portion of this building was dangerously close to the northbound lane of US 319 N/SR 35 at Jacob Hall Rd in Tift Co. Fortunately, nobody hit the remnants. It appears the building fell off the frame and overturned. It was a first for Assistant Area Engineer for Maintenance Jerry Wayne Smith, who's seen a lot of odd items on the road in his 17 years with GDOT. ...Thanks to law enforcement for flagging traffic while GDOT maintenance pushed the structure a safe distance from the roadway and put out barrels and a shoulder closed sign. Please be responsible and don't leave road hazards out there, especially when it's dark and it's a two-lane road. If it's something you can't move, call law enforcement, who will notify GDOT if it's a state route. We want everyone to #ArriveAliveGA.
