I've always understood the importance of this quote. However, I haven't always lived it out. There are times when my momentary emotion gets the better of me and my logo, my business card, do not leave the impression I desire. I've been working all my life to develop a greater ability to respond rather than reply, to allow my values to always override my emotions, to put off the old and put on the new as it's written in Ephesians. While I'm still striving for that goal, I also work to try to help others on that path. It is one of my greatest privileges as a counselor.

After reading Maya Angelou's mission statement yesterday, I was drawn again to many favorite uplifting statements from her. This one is especially important. I seek to help my clients develop this perspective. It is extremely liberating to live your life in such a way that the judgment of others does not cause self-doubt.

Reading some personal mission statements this afternoon. I love this one by Maya Angelou. This is what I try to accomplish for clients every day. In what ways would you like to increase your thriving with passion, humor and style?

How about this as an intervention for depression:

Planning ahead can be great but remember all things in moderation. Over focusing on what could possibly happen can lead to or amplify your experience of anxiety while staying grounded in the present moment tends to decrease those symptoms and increase life satisfaction.
