Elizabeth Beck, associate professor of social work and director of the Center for Collaborative Social Work, received a Fulbright Scholar award for the West Bank. In Fall 2011, Beck will work with Bethlehem University to start the first Masters of Social Work program in the West Bank and lecture on trauma and its healing in Bethlehem University.

The Board of Regents recently granted approval to the Georgia State University Institute of Public Health to offer a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health degree. The new degree program supports the university’s overall ten-year strategic plan and its emphasis on public health education. In addition, it will help meet the demand for highly-trained public health researchers in Georgia.

Nutrition program deadline change ---Due to the inclement weather and the closing of GSU, we are changing the deadline for the Coordinated Program applications. It is currently listed as January 15th and we are changing it, for 2011, to January 20th.

Looking for an exciting study abroad program in Latin America? Consider the College of Health and Human Sciences Costa Rican study abroad program, May 16-27, 2011. Costa Rica has a strong tourism industry, economy and one of the most stable democratic governments in Central America, making it an ideal location for a student’s first international experience. Students will learn about the Costa Rican healthcare system, study social justice issues and medical tourism, as well as the Costa Rican court system. They will also study local foods and Latin cooking, receive Spanish language classes and practice their new languages skills in the host village. Application deadline is February 1, 2011.

Institute of Public Health receives $6.7 million grant for research center in health disparities ... The National Institutes of Health has awarded Georgia State University with a five-year grant to start a new Center for Excellence in Health Disparities Research, which will investigate health disparity issues in Atlanta’s urban environment.
