Georgia Child Fatality Review 29.01.2021

Summer is here and swimming pools, lakes, water parks, etc. are all great places for children and families to have fun and stay cool during these hot summer months. It is important that we all do our part in ensuring children stay safe both in and around water. Remember, it only takes a few seconds for a small child to wander off. Drowning is silent and can happen quickly. Never leave children unattended near any body of water, not even for a minute. Avoid distractions, provide adequate supervision, and utilize water precautions to ensure children continue to safely have fun in the sun

Georgia Child Fatality Review 19.12.2020

In the past three years, 268 youth have taken their own lives in Georgia. For every young person who dies by suicide, national statistics indicate 25 others will have attempted to take their own lives. That means approximately 3,600 other children have attempted suicide during the same time. In response, several Georgia organizations came together to produce a series of public service announcements (PSA) aimed at children helping children which was released in 2018. The PS...As includes survivors who have attempted suicide and bravely share their stories in dealing with depression, anxiety, and other adolescent issues. Others offer hope and support in this peer-to-peer message to children who may be at risk. To continue to raise suicide awareness, GBI’s Child Fatality Review unit partnered with America Movie Network, Voices for Georgia’s Children and Behavioral Health Link to stream the 30 sec PSA in the homes of the viewers using several in-home streaming networks. From March 27, 2020 through April 26, 2020, the 30 sec PSA along with banner ads connecting viewers to the MYGCAL app were streamed in over 200 zip codes in Georgia. At the end of the four week roll out, we successfully delivered over 400,000 impressions, promoted the use of the MyGCAL app and the use of Georgia Crisis and Access Line. Increasing the viewers’ knowledge and awareness of services is a critical factor in ensuring media messages are acted upon. By broadcasting the PSA on larger platforms, our hope is that we continue to remind youth, their families, and their friends that resources are readily available to aid in the prevention of youth suicide in Georgia while also encouraging them to seek help when needed. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month! In light of CoVid-19 and practicing social distancing, let us not forget about our children. Let parents/caregivers know it is still okay to ask for help during this time! Encourage families to seek additional resources by calling the 1-800-CHILDREN (1-800-244-5373) Helpline to talk to trained professionals who can connect them with supportive programs in their area. Don't forget to wear blue on April 3rd :)
