Today we are featuring Asadata Defora, a dance pioneer responsible for bringing authentic West African dance and culture to audiences in the United States, opening a door to a new study of cultural dance and performance. Originally from Sierra Leone, Dafora first came to the states in 1929. He soon thereafter formed Shogola Oloba, a dance and singers troupe, to present movement-based dramas based on West African myth and lore. Dafora was the first known artist who endeavored ...to present authentic African forms outside a tribal setting. He influenced artists like Pearl Primus who later incorporated African elements into her choreography. We love learning about these amazing black dance figures. Hi Ashleigh and Gray here! We are just doing a little happy dance because we made it through 2020! We wanted to take the time to say thank you to our GDC family that has gone on this 2020 journey with us. It hasn’t been an easy one but we know the lessons we learned have only made GDC stronger and better. We are so proud to be here at this moment and doing what we love. A big shout out to our AMAZING Faculty and Staff! From learning how to teach online classes to r...eturning back to the studio, y’all have been rockstars. New protocols & online classes never stopped you from pouring into our students. We feel so lucky to have a team like y’all. We hope that dance has been a bright spot in your 2020. Personally, teaching our dancers has been the highlight of our year and we can’t wait to see everyone back in the studio or online soon! We may not know what 2021 holds but one thing is for sure, we will keep growing, dancing and creating at GDC. Happy New Year!! -Ashleigh & Gray

In honor of Black History Month we will be sharing stories of black trailblazers in the dance field throughout the month of February. Today we are featuring the stunning Raven Wilkinson, credited with having been the first African-American to dance for a major classical ballet company. Wilkinson broke the color barrier in 1955 when she signed a contract with prestigious Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was promoted to soloist during her second season with the troupe, and remained with the company for six years. Wilkinson later became a mentor to American Ballet Theatre principal dancer, Misty Copeland, presenting Copeland with the 2014 Dance Magazine Award. #BlackHistoryMonth #GrowingDancingCreating #GeorgiaDanceConservatory
