Resident Spotlight Meet Daniel Sharbel, one of our amazing residents, he is currently a PGY-5 in ENT. Hometown: Nashville, TN... Undergrad: University of Georgia Medical School: University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine Specialty: Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program: Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Medical College of Georgia Fellowship: I will be starting a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology, Microvascular Reconstruction, and Cranial Base surgery at Vanderbilt University in July 2021. Future plans: Career in academic Head and Neck Surgery Fun fact: I'm an audiobook nerd. I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction, but mostly fiction. I'm currently working my way through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. I like to listen to books in the car and when doing chores at home. How do you picture humanistic patient care/ the practice of humanism within your given specialty? "Humanistic care within the scope of my specialty is perhaps no better depicted than through the multidisciplinary care provided for the head and neck cancer patient. These patients suffer from uniquely debilitating malignancies for which the treatments can be life altering. While I cannot truly understand the challenges and suffering that my patients experience in losing various faculties such as speech or swallowing, I am moved by my their resilience, faith, and love for life and family. It is profoundly meaningful and fulfilling to me as a physician to play a role in the management and surveillance of these patients. For me, understanding how to meet their basic needs and goals for quality of life in light of their cancer continues to teach me more about what it means to be human."

This year, GHHS began a National Initiative about Structural Racism and Its Impact on Medicine to encourage people to start conversations about racism and its impact on medicine. We have compiled a list of books that delve into racism in medicine and health inequities. This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but it is a starting point for us to begin to educate ourselves. Comment below if you have read any of these or if you have any other suggestions! We would love to hear your thoughts! #solidarityweek The Arnold P. Gold Foundation
If you're on Twitter, you should follow these anti-racism advocates on #MedTwitter. If you're not on #MedTwitter, consider joining! #MedTwitter is a great way to connect and engage with many individuals, groups, and organizations in medicine from across all specialties. #solidarityweek The Arnold P. Gold Foundation
