Go Fix Georgia by Planned PEThood 10.06.2021

Two tiny, unthrifty little kittens sitting in a shelter. Fortunately, the officers knew we come every week and begged for us to find placement for them. Sadly, one sibling already passed before we could get to them. However, our rescue was able to step up for the remaining siblings and now they are in our care at Planned PEThood of GA. They are getting the best medical treatment and we look forward to seeing them blossom!

We were so inspired by the amazing adoption photo success from City of Wichita Falls Animal Services that we decided to work with one of our partner shelters to do our own! Every other week, our Go Fix Georgia program provides medical and spay/neuter services for Habersham County Animal Shelter. Far outside of the metro Atlanta area, they do not have a doctor on staff and have limited vet options in their county. With our partnership, we have fixed over 400 cats and dogs for ...them in just 2 years! Without further ado, please allow us to introduce some of the stunning adoptable dogs and cats of Habersham County. Personally, we think we #nailedit Don't you agree?! ;) Applications or inquiries for any of these animals can be done through email at [email protected] or on their Facebook page at Habersham County Animal Shelter Please share so these babies can finally go home! And if these photos made you laugh without adding another furry creature to your family, please consider a donation. Our program currently helps rural shelters in Georgia keep their adoption programs running at full speed, allowing these shelters to have healthy, spayed and neutered animals up for adoption. #adoptdontshop #shelterdog #sheltercat #rescuedismyfavoritebreed #FridayFunnies #gofixgeorgia #plannedpethoodofga

Whatever it takes for sweet shelter animals to get adopted! We love this story...

RIP Goose :'( We hesitated to post this update, but ultimately felt it was important to share why the Go Fix Georgia program is so vital to our rural shelters. Goose was brought in as a stray to Newton County Animal Shelter with severe wounds around his neck and chest. The shelter staff immediately reached out to us, sent us pictures and asked what we thought. The pictures didn't look that bad, so we asked them to make sure he was comfortable until we got there. He was transp...orted to our clinic at Planned PEThood of GA where our doctor was awaiting his arrival. During his exam, we found the wounds to be much more grave than the images showed, and deeply infected. He also had other severe medical issues stacked against him, including a severe heart murmur, emaciation, overall a poor body condition. Simply put, Goose was struggling to survive. His body wouldn't be able to overcome all that was upon him. Our doctor made the humane decision to euthanize him this afternoon. However, we gave him all the wet food he wanted and we made sure to shower him with affection right up until he took his last breath. The reason it was so important to share his story, is that our partnership gives animals like him a chance at life. If we were not working together his choices would have been to be euthanized immediately upon intake at the shelter or to suffer in silence until a rescue could be found. Unfortunately, we were unable to save him, however we were able to give him a ton of love and a peaceful farewell. His life mattered and we strive to continue to be good stewards for all of the animals in our care.

Regal is his name, and boy does he live up to it! He is handsome and was ready to for his camera moment. This adorable puggle mix comes to us from Athens Clarke County Animal Control and already has several potential adopters waiting. He came into the shelter as a stray that was never claimed. As with most stray dogs, he was not fixed. An unspayed or unneutered dog will find ways to escape and wander to find a mate. This is why its so important to fix your pets; to keep them safe, at home where they belong! For members of the public wanting more information on how to schedule an appointment, head on over to our website at www.pethoodga.org

Cute little puppies like this never last long at the shelter! Little Miss Coco has been pre-adopted before her transport on our Go Fix Georgia bus. Her adopters were extremely happy to pick her up upon return to Newton County Animal Shelter after her spay surgery at Planned PEThood of GA! Coco was the happiest patient ever and said she loved hanging out with us for the day! Even better, she will never have a litter of puppies contribute to the overpopulation problem of shelter pets here in Georgia. That's one more easy peasy success story to give good feels for your weekend!

Thelma and Louise! These sweet, elderly sisters were brought into Newton County Animal Shelter when their previous owner could no longer care for them. At over 12 years old, they had some health issues and were not spayed! They came on our Go Fix Georgia by Planned PEThood bus last week and were spayed by one of our fantastic doctors. We also addressed a few other medical conditions that we could while they were here. We are super thrilled to announce that they had an adopter who kindly took not one, but both of them! They get to stay together. The happiest of endings so that they can live out their golden years side by side!

Planned PEThood of GA has the BEST surgeons with rescuer hearts! Dr. S stepped up once again for a Habersham County Animal Shelter dog who needed a leg amputation. This young female had suffered a badly broken and splintered back leg, most likely from being hit by a car. While we might not know the details, we know it certainly wasn't going to heal well and it needed to come off. A good samaritan contacted the shelter, who reached out to us. As with all the shelters that work... with our Go Fix Georgia by Planned PEThood program, Habersham does not have a doctor on staff, nor has surplus funds lying around. By offering our non-profit services to them, we were able to spay her and amputate her leg for far less than a full service or emergency vet would be able to. This means they don't have to choose between costs and euthanizing. As we have said countless times before, saving one life at a time. And it adds up. Between eye removals, amputations and other specialty surgeries, we have already helped them save more than a dozen special needs cases this year! That's in addition to their regular spay and neuters. Thank you to Dr. S and the loving staff at Habersham! We look forward to seeing Winter recover as a tripod and be placed up for adoption soon.

We waited to post their story until we were sure they had a happy ending coming! These two chihuahua girls, mother and daughter duo, went to BarkVille Dog Rescue from one of our partner shelters a few weeks ago. They were stressed and not the friendliest, and had already been labeled a bite risk for an unfortunate encounter with an officer. (The dog claims its completely untrue, but if it was true, totally his fault!) Shelters cannot adopt out cases where the dogs might bite,... so we couldn't be more grateful that Barkville stepped up to help. Two weeks of decompression and some good training, these two girls are nothing but happy and bouncy pups! They are doing incredibly well in their foster home and we are thrilled that they have a new chance at life. They have a great adoption application in for them. Paws and fingers crossed that they move on to their furrever home really soon! And a huge thank you to Barkville, for taking a chance on them knowing that sometimes a little extra love makes aaaallll the difference in the world!

Our Go Fix Georgia by Planned PEThood program is super excited to welcome Athens Clarke County Animal Control into our fold! This is our second official time that we have transported for them, and during our first we were so excited that we fell all over ourselves upon return and failed to get a picture while there ;) We look forward to working with them, as we supplement their current spay and neuter surgeries throughout spring and summer. More fixed and adoptable pets moving out the doors is their goal, as well as ours! Our Go Fix Georgia program is growing faster than expected and we love seeing the progress we are making in counties all over in our state!

Have you ever had one of those days, where everything just starts off wrong? That's been today for us. When we were getting ready to head out for our weekly pick up at Newton County Animal Shelter, it was discovered that someone STOLE the catalytic converter off of our transport van!! The worst part, this is the second vehicle this has happened to for us at Planned PEThood of GA!! One of our other vans was vandalized just a few months ago. Who steals from an animal r...escue?! While we are doing everything we can on our end including working with local law enforcement and monitoring our security cameras, this still hurts us tremendously. As a non-profit, we don't have extra funds to apply to large and unexpected repairs such as this. All of our money goes to the animals! The $1,000+ repair might mean one less medical case we can take on, or one less specialty surgery for a shelter. We never want to have to say no when the time comes. We are very fortunate that we were able to shuffle vehicles and take another van today. Our trip to help shelter animals still happened, only an hour late. But our primary transport van is now at the shop getting repaired and will be needed for next week. Will you be able to send us a few dollars towards this unexpected bill? We really appreciate your support and promise to keep updating you with all of the animals we are helping across Georgia each week. With your help, we are almost at 2,000 animals on our buses! Thank you for your support <3 And one last thank you for all hands on deck today. Our volunteers showed up in droves, and although we were late, unloaded all animals in under an hour. Thank you to Rena, Tracie, Steph, Cammie, Alex and Caleb for all of your help, in the pouring rain!
