There is one more day to Donate to Carolyn Sheppard Choe’s Birthday fundraiser. We have passed the goal, but if we raise $500 more today, we will reach an entire month’s rent while we sit empty. Can you help us out?

Y'all, today is a very special day to us at Out of Box! It's the birthday of Amber Clarke Rampy, our Executive Director, partner, and wonderful friend! We would be *nowhere* without this woman, and are grateful for her every day, but especially today! So raise a glass of whatever you have on hand and toast this fantastic woman, wife, nurse and friend!

We ask you to join us. We will be there Monday, June 29th, but you are welcome to come when you can. Our community is experiencing a reckoning. The global effects of the pandemic, and now the civil unrest in our communities, are highlighting the disparities between white lives and the lives of People of Color- especially Black people. A seismic shifting of the status quo is threatening to rock the foundation upon which so many theaters in this community have built their lega...cies. When we are able to make theatre again, we cannot return to business as usual. We cannot return to theatre companies that will not acknowledge and respect the voices of the BIPOC community. In an effort to make sure those voices are heard, The Coalition for Racial Equity in Atlanta Theater (CREAT) and Inclusion Diversity Equity in the Arts Atlanta (IDEA ATL) have partnered to host a three-night virtual town hall: June 29th, 6 pm to 9 pm Town Hall for Racial Reckoning* June 30th, 6 pm to 9 pm Town Hall for Racial Reckoning* July 1st, 6 pm to 9 pm Night of Healing for BIPOC Theatre Makers Only

We haven't done enough, We had just begun to really address it in earnest a few months ago. Knowing that there needed to be change, but no real idea how to start piecing it together. We have to figure out just what it will look like in EVERYTHING we do. EVERY. THING. And we will seek input and commentary on what we need to correct and how we can start doing it. It must be thoughtful, deliberate, informed. That takes time. Should take time. It means too much and it doesn't come with a "recipe" to follow. So we will use this time of Intermission to course correct. Learn, grow, redo, reform, renew. Make Out of Box so it is truly is a home for all, not just in our hearts and minds, but in reality. Join hands with us as we keep moving forward.

The Sheriff asked one question... "We are mad too! What can we do?" and the crowd responded, "Join us." I have been at a loss for words for a post from Out of Box because it seems like my words aren't enough. I saw this post from Leni Kai Williams this morning and now I know what words we need to say here. We are mad too! What can we do? ... Join us. Carolyn Sheppard Choe

"We’re mad and we have a right to be mad, because the gaslighting of anti-Blackness is: 'You imagined that.' Or 'It’s really about economics, not race.' There are so many ways people duck and dodge the uncomfortable reality that anti-Blackness is ingrained in the fabric of our country . I wanted it to be a no-gaslighting space. Black people feel however they feel and that’s okay in this space, and should be okay in the world. And since I am having a Black woman’s experience a...s a human on this planet, I know very well that there’s this stereotype, there’s this mythology about Black women being mad. In order to challenge that, there’s pressure from the community for us not to be mad, to be something else, to be a carefree Black girl. I’m not interested in being bound by either of those pressures/expectations. I just want to be my authentic self." - Aleshea Harris, speaking about her play WHAT TO SEND UP WHEN IT GOES DOWN See more
