Bottlebrush buckeye (Aesculus parviflora), the summer cousin to our spring buckeyes, is blooming now. Native to just a couple of counties on the western side of... Georgia, this large shrub loves to grow in many other places. It prefers full sun where it grows large and full, topped by numerous spires (racemes, but spires sounded elegant) of fluffy flowers. Pollinators love the flowers and single buckeyes form from the pollinated ones. See more

Downy rattlesnake plantain (Goodyera pubescens) is an evergreen native orchid that blooms in the summer. In the northern half of Georgia you might have noticed ...its intricately patterned leaves of green and white nestled in upland woods. You might even have found a small colony of them as they spread slowly by creeping stems at ground level. About now you can go back and check them for stalks of white flowers, lightly covered in downy hairs. The small flowers will be pollinated by small bees, and small seeds (tiny really) will form in dry capsules. See more

Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) grows in moist bottomland forests across eastern North America. It’s name comes from the club-like spadix (the Jack) th...at has a cluster of small flowers in spring. The Jack is surrounded and covered by a leaf-like sheath (the pulpit). One interesting feature of this perennial is its ability to change its sex each year based on resource availability. When the plant has abundant stored resources for developing fruit, it becomes a large plant with female flowers on the spadix (called a Jill now). Some people call this a Jill-in-the-Pulpit. If stored resources are more scarce, a smaller male plant develops with male flowers on the spadix (a Jack). Some individuals even possess both male and female flowers. More information is with each picture.
