Groovy pics of retro computer systems and workflow at GT. Can you imagine walking a punch card to a computer room for answers to your computation needs? Maybe it’s easy to imagine because you lived it! We welcome both experiences to explore our vintage computer records in the Archives. Happy Weekend!!

#TBT from Georgia Tech Archives: In celebration of Women’s History Month, we recognize Dr. Helen E. Grenga (pictured above), the first tenured female engineerin...g professor at Georgia Tech. Dr. Grenga joined the chemistry department as a metallurgy professor in 1968 and was promoted to full Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering in 1976. She also held administrative roles on campus, including director in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research and Dean in the Office of Academic Affairs. While at Tech, she received grants from the NSF and NASA to study the effects of carbon monoxide on metals and alloys and the metallurgical applications of ion plating and ion implantation. She worked to promote women in STEM fields by serving as president of the national Society of Women Engineers (SWE) from 1981 to 1982 and faculty advisor for the Georgia Tech student chapter of SWE for many years. The society is pictured below. Georgia Tech continues to honor Dr. Grenga’s legacy through the Helen Grenga Outstanding Woman Engineer Award, which is presented to a female engineering student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service in her field and in the Georgia Tech community.
