39 weeks today Officially over pregnancy and this pandemic but since there’s no sign of either ending I’m here. This is one of my favorite images from my maternity shoot with @choldenphotography four weeks ago.

@chocolatecurlsbeauty went and dug these oldies but goodies out of the crate over on @cutitkinky . The first pic is the finished result of my very first wash and go in a client. The second pic is my very first tight curl cut + style. I had just attended a Deva Inspired class in NYC and I hv was eager to apply what I learned. Both happened in October 2011. Hot mess express right? Who was gonna pay me for these trash ass results?!... I almost gave up on trying to bring wash and go hair to my clients. But instead I cracked open every cosmetology book I had in my house and bought every natural hair product I could get my hands on. Less than three years later my menu was almost 100% tight curly cuts and styling. My learning curve was steep as hell and at times embarrassing. The goal now though is to make working with 3-D hair second nature to cosmetologists through @cutitkinky Tight Curl Theory.

#tbt to when we could meet 30-40 in a room to learn tight curls. Curl Artists, slow down on the tight curls. Get that hair saturated with plenty of styler then SLOW DOWN as you are distributing and styling. It will make a world of difference in the definition you’re able to achieve on even the most dehydrated hair.

I do miss cutting curls, but I got a bit of my fix this summer filming The Tight Curl Theory. The Tight Taper Expansion is live in the Mastermind and will be updated in the self guided course by Wednesday. I had so much fun crafting these shapes @mondaysarebeautiful

I need alla y’all to witness just how big this belly is. And this was 2 weeks ago. We wrapped up the original filming of @cutitkinky The Tight Curl Theory at the end of June, but as I was compiling the finished videos into the course we realized there wasn’t enough short shapes. Tapers are my jam, but I see a lot of other stylists and curl artists struggling with them. We decided to reconvene our team of videographer @dariousthomas and photographer @mondaysarebeautiful to do ...an expansion pack to the course. 5 Tight curly models, @chocolatecurlsbeauty on styling, and me on cutting. This belly! It’s time to go sat down for real. We shoot 5 short models this Saturday @curlsocietychicago. Because our education has shifted to digital and you’ll have the ability to watch and rewatch and rewind...we wanted to make sure y’all are beyond confident to execute any length of tight curl cutting. @hairloveart was on the cutting and teaching and I was on the setting and styling. I have to tell y’all that this additional content is going to blow y’all minds. Aeleise has a way of teaching short cuts in an absolutely effortless manner. I promise if you struggle with any area of cutting short tight curls you will be forever changed once this goes live. Hell, I’m gonna be changed after this and I’m the other half of this operation.

This is me deep in a consultation. When a client sits down in my chair I give them 3-5 minutes to tell me the story of their hair and what they want that day. Then, I ask about 12 questions based on what they’ve told me. Because somewhere along the way there were some conflicting desires, confusing priorities, and unclear direction in what they want from me.... Those questions are to clarify our understanding as stylist and client. Then I grab the mirror and my trusty Pinterest board so the client can see their hair 360 as we discuss realistic possibilities based on the current condition of their hair.

10+ years of being behind the chair, a few salons, a whole lotta clients, an art degree, a digital salon, and a ton of book study led to this moment. The Tight Curl Theory + Mastermind is the culmination of these experiences and more. It’s the education and mentorship I wish I had starting out as a young booth renter in Chicago.

Somehow I’m always almost 7 months pregnant when we decide to launch something huge In September 2016 I remember struggling to work through Braxton Hicks contractions laying in bed trying to frantically put the finishing touches on our first course ever, The #30DayHairDetox. Today and tomorrow I’ll be hiding in the office I didn’t have in 2016 to put the finishing touches on @cutitkinky The Tight Curl Theory. ... We shot a majority that first course on our iPhone 6’s with no lighting in our craptastic apartments. Four years later we’re blessed to hire our videographer @dariousthomas, our coordinator/assistant @haircousin , and our photographer @mondaysarebeautiful to film in the beautiful new location of our salon @curlsocietychicago . I am in awe and eternally grateful for our growth, elated to be able to serve both consumers and professionals, and insanely happy that this baby is quite a bit more cooperative thus time around. @mondaysarebeautiful

I met @chicagoescurly and her hair in 2015. She was less than a year into her curl journey and had experienced a curly cut that left her less than satisfied. While we were able to rectify the shape in one appointment, it took much longer (6-12 months) to improve the condition of her hair. Our expectations that one salon appointment, one treatment, one method of styling the hair will remedy all of our issues is completely unrealistic. It takes consistency with high quality pro...ducts and patience to get where we are trying to go. Now in 2020, she comes to the salon for dry cuts only. She’s mastered her signature styling and knows exactly what shapes she wants her hair to take. I’m excited to have her as a cut model for Our new @cutitkinky course The Tight Curl Theory. @mondaysarebeautiful

When I first started doing hair in 2010 I gave myself 5 years behind the chair. Somehow I ended up loving the work and the clients. 10 years later after being forced from behind the chair I can admit I miss it. But, I’ve never ever had the desire to be the stylist who was in the salon more than a regular workday a couple times a week. I also have 0 desire to do all the hair. Even in 2020 there’s a shortage of cosmetologists that have proven to natural hair consumers that they can confidently care for their hair. @chocolatecurlsbeauty and I have been working on The Tight Curl Theory for the better part of the summer to remedy this industry wide challenge. Can’t wait to share it with my CurlPro folks.
