Christmas Throwback! This is a picture of Annie Mae Dean Lay (1912-2009) grew up in a large family in Norcross, including her mother and father, Edward Harlan Dean and Marion Boyce Dean, her brothers Edwin and Marshall, and her sisters Grace, Mildred, and Margaret The family lived on Holy Row (now known as Sunset Drive) for many years. Edward Dean worked for the Southern Railway for much of his life, and also had farming interests. ... Annie Mae lived a full life, and in her later years wrote about growing up in the area, and the Christmas experiences she had as a child. Here are a few of those, just as she wrote them: CHRISTMAS TREES Several Christmas stand out in my memory. We never put up a tree until Christmas Eve as we had to live in all the rooms and there was just no room for a tree for very long. I guess Edwin or Marshall or maybe papa even went to the woods and cut one. We always strung pop corn and red and green paper chains and mamma had tensil and we decorated it Christmas Eve. Mamma put real candles in holders on the end of the limbs and lit them on Christmas morning. Sometimes the tree caught on fire but we always put it out and thought nothing of it or the danger it was. When Mildred and I got large enough we usually went and got the tree, a pine. Sometimes we threw little balls of cotton on to make it look like snow. White pocket handkerchiefs we had given papa and Edwin and Marshall were tied on unwrapped and they helped to decorate.
