Heritage Takedown Club

The Heritage Generals Wrestling Team finished their season Top 14 in the State Championship out of the 48 teams that advanced to State. The Generals had 3 wrestlers earn State Medals. Senior Zach Brown-220 finished as State Runner-Up after suffering an injury in the final seconds of his tied Finals match. (Zach’s match was not wrestled until after 11 PM.) Tate Thomas-106 and Cayman Hughey-132 both earned 5th Place medals. Senior Garrett Pennington finished in 7th Place. Fresh...men Evan Wingrove-138 and Skylar Grant-152 both wrestled well and scored points for the team but were eliminated from the tournament two rounds from earning a medal. The Generals improved their placement and number of medalists over last year. Coach Craft said although we did not meet our goals, we are making progress. We expect to have even better results next year as we have a very young team this year. I am proud of all our guys and what they accomplished, especially Zach Brown. I feel sure if his knee had not buckled, he would have gotten the takedown and won the match. (Zach had beaten his opponent twice earlier in the season.) The Heritage HS Wrestling Team got off to a good start the 1st day at the State Championship in Macon GA. The Generals are currently in 10th Place out of the 48 teams that made it to State. Individually, Senior 220 Zach Brown advanced to the Finals by pinning his opponent from Flowery Branch that pinned Zach at State Duals a few weeks ago. 106 Tate Thomas(10th) and 132 Cayman Hughey(10th) both advanced to the Consolation Semifinals and have earned a State Medal. They will wre...stle on Friday night to see what place medal they finish with. Senior 145 Garrett Pennington will wrestle in the Blood Round / Consolation Quarterfinals on Friday night to try to earn a State Medal. If Garrett wins his Consolation Quarterfinals match he is guaranteed a State Medal. Freshmen 138 Evan Wingrove and 152 Skylar Grant both wrestled very well in the State Tournament but were eliminated two matches before earning a State Medal. At the Region 7AAAA Traditional Championship at Pickens HS in Jasper GA, the youthful Heritage HS Wrestling Team crowned two Region Champions and qualified six wrestlers for the State Championship in Macon. The Region Champions are senior 220 Zach Brown and sophomore 132 Cayman Hughey. The Region Medalists are: 106 Tate Thomas-Runner Up 132 Cayman Hughey-Champion 138 Evan Wingrove-3rd... 145 Garrett Pennington(Sr)-Runner Up 152 Skylar Grant-3rd 170 Cooper Ables-4th 220 Zach Brown(Sr)-Champion The Generals improved over last year’s 5 State Qualifiers and one Region Champion. Coach Mike Craft said I’m proud of our two Senior’s strong finish and leading the team with Zach Brown earning a Region Championship and Garrett Pennington earning Region Runner Up. It is a great finish for them. We are looking forward to seeing them on the medal stand at State. I’m also excited that sophomores Cayman Hughey and Tate Thomas lead our younger wrestlers with a Region Championship and another Region Runner Up finish. The future looks bright with freshmen Evan Wingrove & Skylar Grant finishing 3rd and freshman Cooper Ables in 4th. Although, we didn’t achieve all our goals for the event, we are headed in the right direction as we improved over last year. Also, losing returning State Medalist Drew Dietz and Victor Johnson to injuries really hurt us. We look forward to getting them back in the lineup next year. This year GHSA changed the rules due to the Pandemic by only qualifying the Top 3 in Region for State instead of the Top 4 as in the past. The Generals will travel to Macon this week for the State Championship. See more
