Equine skeletal distal limb, part two.
Equine skeletal distal limb.
This is VERY well written and so on point with what I believe it seems he pulled it right out of my head!!
Navicular condition? We are all too aware of the term Navicular Syndrome, and dread to hear it when speaking of our own horses. Don't despair, repair. Now I am... not saying Navicular disease does not exist. Of course it does! but not in the wide scope of epidemic proportions we see in our horse population. What gives? What is Navicular Disease? The very short answer for Facebook is disease of the Navicular bone, resulting in caudal heel pain. But many horses are diagnosed with Navicular Syndrome. What is a syndrome? Showing all the signs of a disease without actually having the disease. So keep that in mind. It takes a long time for this "disease" to rear its ugly head, yet your horse was just diagnosed with Navicular Syndrome. What's next? Well the protocol is to treat it as if its Navicular disease! What then? Remember it started out as only caudal heel pain. What could possibly cause caudal heel pain? Do we know? Do we know what the caudal aspect of the hoof is responsible for? Again for Facebook the short answer is shock absorption. So if the caudal part of the hoof is not doing its job your horse will exhibit caudal heel pain intermittently when its heels have to make contact with the ground. For Facebook purposes very short explanation, but I think you get the point. Now comes in what I rather call this whole mess, Navicular Condition. That being the foot is in such a bad condition structurally that it is unable to perform its job, exposing it as caudal heel pain. Even something as simple as a bad case of thrush could mimic Navicular Syndrome and I have seen cases where thrush wasn't even noticed and the horse was diagnosed with Navicular Syndrome. I cured the thrush, along with applying proper hoof care and restoring health and balance to the hoof and low and behold the caudal heel pain was gone! I will let the photos speak for themselves, I know this post is long. But I will say that I have not yet seen a "healthy" hoof diagnosed with Navicular Syndrome. It is the terrible condition of the hoof that is most responsible for this wide spread epidemic know as Navicular Syndrome. Again don't despair, repair! See more
