For Week 6 of our 52 Weeks of Adventures program we partnered with @thealidahotel Our dog Clinton became a quality control inspector making sure all of the Alida’s furry guests have the best stay. It’s safe to say they passed with flying colours! Upon check in each doggy guest receives a water bowl, doggy bed, poop bags and some treats. In the heart of downtown Savannah taking your dog for a walk becomes exciting with so much to see and do. From the beautiful squares to the ...vibrant river street there are so many places that are in walking distance. The Alida is also our original pet fee hotel program partner. Where a portion of every guests Pet Fee gets donated back to HSGS. Guests have been so excited about this program and we Thank everyone for their support! So instead here is a list of different ways you can show Kindness in your community. Bonus these are all COVID Friendly! 1. Call your grandparents and other members of your family and tell them you love them. 2. Plan a bear hunt in your neighborhood by asking people to put stuffed bears in their windo...ws. Download printable poster and social media post. 3. Add encouraging messages to your sidewalks using chalk. 4. Paint a rock with a kind message and leave it for someone to find. 5. FaceTime a friend from school that you don't talk to often to say hello. 6.Hang a bird feeder. Plant a bee & butterfly garden. 7. Make your parents breakfast, lunch, or dinner. 8. Pay it forward. Pay for someone’s order in the drive thru line. 9. Color pictures for or write notes for our Soldiers over seas. 10. Leave a note and a small gift for delivery drivers. 11. Write a letter or make a card and drop them off to a nursing home. 12. Wear a mask. 13. Stay at least 6 feet away from other people, even your grandparents. 14. Volunteer. 15. Keep some Granola bars and other non Perishables in your car for someone who looks hungry. Tag us in your acts of kindness! @humanesocietysav #HSGSKindnessWeek

Humane Society for Greater Savannah 23.11.2020

It all began with a dog named Joshua. A year ago, we met with the staff of Humane Society for Greater Savannah to discuss bringing a program called #K9ForADay t...o the State of Georgia. After coming to an enthusiastic agreement, we shook hands and posed for a photo opportunity with Josh. Once it hit social media, word of our new partnership spread quickly. Within a day Joshua had found a new home. His success would set the tone for the first year, in which 17 other shelter dogs would join our officers on patrol in order to exercise, socialize and gain exposure. All were adopted. This #ThrowbackThursday, we’re proud to say that the K9 For A Day program returns for it’s second year very soon. The goal this year is to shatter our current record, but we’ll need YOUR help to make it a reality. Stay tuned!

Today was one of those mostly happy but slightly sad days. Porky found the best forever home! He will get all the love and attention he deserves! This was definitely the hardest adoption I have had to see in all the best ways. I love you so much Porky and I am so happy for you! Only a few tears were shed on my part to watch you go. As staff members and Volunteers you get so used to not getting attached, but sometimes extra special dogs like porky just slip their way in. Like sun beams through a window crack. #Porky #BrighterThanTheSun -Staff member Montana

Meet Charlotte Charlotte May be a representation of her home city. Born there in North Carolina, little is known about her previous owner. She came to us in Savannah with little more than the collar on her neck and a sweet attitude. Elegant and charming, Charlotte loves to play in the dirt, digging and running around without a care. She will run, she will jump, but she will also sit down in your lap and chill. She is not large but will surprise you with her bursts of energy... and jumping. Due to a minor skin condition, she is prone to rolling on the ground and scratching. When she’s not in her kennel she enjoys bones and tennis balls. Highly recommended for any family or person who wants a sweet, friendly companion. While she would likely thrive in a backyards environment, anyone living downtown might consider taking her on a stroll. She is very friendly with people and would likely enjoy the spacious squares. Charlotte does not have any heart worms or parasites, thankfully she will not be a risk for excessive noise as she is very well behaved. If you have any children in your life she is excitable but not rough with them. Thanks to a soft, black coat, this mixed breed puppy will warm right up to you. If you think you could provide Charlotte with a home, by loving and caring for her, feel free to stop by and say hello. We are open Monday through Saturday, 1 to 6. Biggie went on his Doggy Day Out yesterday and got so spoiled! He went for a walk around downtown and then stopped by our partner Five Guys for a cheeseburger. I love this program so much as it allows our animals to be seen in a different light; outside of the shelter. They receive so much love and individual attention. It gives them a chance to receive both mental and physical stimulation bettering their health. Above all they get to spend the whole time meeting people who could end up being their forever person. We are grateful for all our partners: Five Guys on Broughton, @bentleyswhitemarsh , @pelicanssav and @southboundbrews . If you are interested in participating in our program Doggy Day Out where you get to take out an HSGS dog on a preapproved adventure please email Montana at [email protected]

Meet Munchi Munchi is full of energy and is still an active puppy. He is looking for a family with older children because of his enthusiastic personality. Munchi would be a perfect walking buddy for an owner who loves long walks and fresh air. Munchi is still learning because, after all, he is only 10 months old. He has come far on basic commands like sit and stay, but he would love to learn more commands! Munchi would do well with other animals in the house. He is very friendly with cats. He is crate trained and prefers to be in the crate if you or your family decide to go out with him, he can get antsy if he is left alone. He loves treats especially bones! He would love to become a part of your family. Written by volunteer Tara I.

January 11th 2021 Let’s beat a world record! Most cats on a zoom call at once. The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is a proud member of the million cat challenge. The million cat challenge partners with rescues around North America. Each month HSGS and all the other rescues submit our cat adoption stats into their data base. The Million Cat Challenge was conceived as a shelter-based campaign to save the lives of one million cats in North America over the course of five ...years, a goal its 1,075 participating shelters met in less than four years, prompting a second phase of the project: #allthecats. Rescue is never about competition. We all have the same goal and that is finding animals the best homes! At HSGS we frequently share supplies with other Rescues sometimes stretching as far as Atlanta. This time around we partnered with our favourite small dog rescue GRRR Georgia Rescue, Rehabilitation & Relocation and gave them 279 brand new small and extra small harnesses, out of the over 800 we got donated from fulfillment.com We we’re also able to share 5 bags full with Chatham Animal Services. Renegade Paws Rescue will also be by to pick some up. Thank you fulfillment.com for making all this possible!

Volunteer of the month: Nick Faraklas Nick has logged more than 232 volunteer hours with HSGS!! He is a lifeline to the feral cat community, helping trap, socialize and find these deserving felines their next forever homes! His dedication and passion for his community is unparallel! Thank you, Nick, for all your hard work and dedication to the cause! Where are you from? I grew up on the New Jersey Shore, and ended up in the Philadelphia area before moving to Savannah in 20...16. Love it here! How long have you been volunteering at HSGS? Since 2019 and boy have, I learned a lot. I am in awe of the effort the HSGS staff and volunteers put in each and every day to help animals in our community. What is your favorite program at the shelter? ( pawjama parties, dog day out, surrender prevention, adoptions, etc). Love it when I see a pet being selected for adoption. Pawjama parties are great as well. Who was your favorite animal to work with, past or present? I'll put a plug in for Sabrina who is pawjama parting at our house right now. A sweetheart. Tell your friends to check her out and let's find her a home soon. What is your favorite thing to do in Savannah? Outdoor activities like tennis and pickleball, also enjoy the seafood restaurants.

About 500 cars went through the mobile food distribution lines today! I'm so thankful that we got to serve some of Chatham County's owned pets so they can continue to stay with their people. Surrender prevention means we can focus our resources on the homeless pets that do come through our doors. A huge shoutout goes to Dana Ciccarelli, Stephanie Tutt, and Hannah Tutt for helping our community today! We definitely put in sweat, but thankfully no blood or tears. Check out WS...AV for a short interview about more ways you can help us help them! Good Morning- we are here at Memorial Stadium doing a Mobile Food Pantry Distribution. 8-10am. Need Food??? We have the FREE Food to help out those who are struggling with hunger! And the Humane Society for Greater Savannah will help out your fur babies. Foster of the Month: January: Eva Newbold Meet our foster of the month Eva! We absolutely love Eva at HSGS she is always ready to take in more kittens no matter what time of day it is. Eva has fostered 22 kittens for us! Thank you so much for everything you do! Learn a little more about Eva below. 1. Where are you from?... I’m from Richmond Hill, GA! 2. Why do you foster? I first started fostering in Gainesville, FL after the first cat I had on my own, Darcy, passed away from FIP. Having foster cats around was so beneficial for me after Darcy passed. I love the chance take care of kittens and prepare them to meet their forever families. When I moved back to Richmond Hill, I reached out to HSGS and was soon fostering again! 3. What do you usually do when your here? I’m normally picking up or dropping off a foster kitten! 4. How long have you fostered? I’ve been fostering for about 4 years, and have been fostering with HSGS for 2 years. 5. What’s your favourite thing we do at the shelter (could be program like nuzzle buddies or our spay and neuter, events in the community, humane education, pawjama parties etc.)? I love all of the programs you have at HSGS but I especially love the pawjama parties. It’s such a great experience for the pets and the humans! 6. Tell us a little bit about yourself? After graduate school, I decided to come back to the Savannah area. I’ve worked in politics for the last two years, fostering all the while. In a couple of weeks, I’ll be starting a year as an Americorps VISTA volunteer in Washington, D.C., so my latest fosters (Garth Brooks and Fancy) will be my last for a little while. 7. What pets do you have at home? I have my cat Isla. She’s a bit curmudgeonly, and my mom calls her El Diablo, but I love her to pieces! I adopted her when she was a couple months old from a cat rescue in Gainesville, FL where I was attending graduate school. 8. Was there an animal at the shelter new or old that was a favourite for you. (Could still be at the shelter or has since been adopted) or one that you have fostered. There are two fosters that are especially close to my heart. The first would have to be Wilma. She was my first bottle baby. She was so sweet and playful (even my cat Isla loved her, and that’s saying something!). The other foster would have to be Mimi. I fostered her at the start of the pandemic when the shelter was closed. She loved to snuggle and joined me for many Zoom meetings. She was such a good quarantine companion! Thank you, Montana, and the rest of the HSGS staff or giving me the chance to continue to foster kittens over the years. I’ve loved every minute of it!

Meet: Luz Luz is a gentle soul who plays and cuddles as softly as her fur. She is shy at first and might hiss at you, but she's all bark and no bite. Once you sit down with her, she'll bump your hand for pets and attention. She loves cat trees and hidey holes. For a quiet, sweet girl like Luz, a low energy home with lots of patience, love, and places to explore will be the perfect furever home. Written by staff member Connor.

Thank you to all our fosters for opening up their hearts and homes this holiday season. We are so Grateful our babies woke up to such loving families on Christmas morning. We currently have close to 75 animals in foster.

Humane Society for Greater Savannah 09.12.2019

Today, before I sit down with my family and celebrate I wanted to take the time to say thank you to our volunteers. This year has been rough for some many and in the mist of all the chaos, you chose to still show up. Cleaning a kennel, making crafts, snuggling a shy cat, greeting a customer, fostering, fundraising, smiling, encouraging a scared dog; you showed up.... Thank you. This community gives me hope. Together, we are able to make a difference in the lives of so many deserving pets and people because you made that choice to show up. I look forward to working along side you all in 2021 and continuing the mission. Thank you for your friendship and service ! Wishing you and yours a very Merry Holiday! Santa always makes a stop at HSGS. He filled up our dogs stockings with bones and toys. For the cats there was catnip galore. We are very excited for everyone to wake up tomorrow morning to all their Christmas gifts. Unfortunately the North Pole is much to cold for our babies to live or else Santa would take them all home. We will be open this Saturday from 1-6pm. A forever home would be the best gift of all.

9 new neonatal puppies arrived tonight just in time for Christmas. Unfortunately momma was disinterested in feeding which is when our amazing fosters stepped in. All puppies are eating well and are currently safe in their new foster homes. Adoptions are not currently open on these puppies. Please refrain from emailing or calling until we open adoptions.

Foster Needed! Walnut Walnut has done so well at his board and train with At My Side K9 that we would like to find an adoption Ambassador for him. At this stage of our new Adoption Ambassador program your tasks and goals would be to foster Walnut until he were to get adopted. Walnut is a completely different dog inside the shelter than he is outside of it. Walnut is the type of dog who needs his human and attention. The shelter environment unfortunately is very stressful for... Walnut. An adoption Ambassador for Walnut would mean you try you hardest to up keep his training. At My Side K9 trainer Ben is more than happy to help you as well as the HSGS Staff. Ben believes in training the trainer, Consistency is the key to Walnuts Success. If Walnut had an astrology sign it would be Taurus. He is stubborn and strong willed but very eager to please. Walnut is extremely loyal and loves to be outside running around. Walnut’s favourite things are schedules and organization. He knows exactly what time Breakfast and Dinner should be and needs consistent walks. Walnut is a working dog and needs a task to tire him out. I can accurately tell you all this because I myself am a Taurus and every characteristic I just described for Walnut I have also done myself. From trainer Ben He is a squared away house companion. He is a strong-willed dog by nature, but if he has an owner or Foster who will make sure to be consistent with him they will be all set. He does not mouth and jump on me, and he listens on a leash. He definitely needs an owner who understands that he is a full-time companion. He needs stimulation and attention or he will become bored and destructive. He knows his commands, and is much more manageable on a leash. no more lunging and jumping and snapping at the leash or the handler. He is polite with food as well. The adoption Ambassador we are looking for is a very active person. Someone who understands his needs and would be willing to bring him to the shelter to meet with potential adopters once they get screened by adoption team. The truth about walnut is that he grew up in and out of the shelter, bouncing from home to home. Walnut is 11months and a very big baby who never received proper training when he was younger. He very much reminds me of a child who grew up in the foster care system bouncing from home to home, who is now at no fault of their own a bit challenging in the best ways possible. The reward for loving Walnut and earning his Trust is like no other. Will you be Walnuts Adoption Ambassador? Will you be his new Best Friend? If interested please email Montana at [email protected] All supplies included. See more

We currently have two bonded pairs in the shelter. Luna and Artemis, Melba and Margo. These cats need each other in their lives to feel secure and be happiest in a home. When you consider adopting a cat, staff always recommends adopting two. There are several benefits to having a multi-cat household. These cats already have each other, the only thing these cats are missing are you! Bonded cats have an easier transition from the shelter to your household. Its always a joyous... moment when you find your new forever friend, but for cats it can sometimes be quite frightening. There are so many new smells, new people, and sights, so sometimes a cat can feel overwhelmed. A bonded pair can always count on their significant other kitty to find familiarity. That familiar comfort in the home will make the adjustment from the shelter to the household a lot easier. We understand that you may have a very busy life, and a bonded pair of cats certainly understand that as well! When you adopt a bonded pair, and you find yourself away from home often, the cats have each other to rely on. This means that separation anxiety is lessened, and that the cats will be too preoccupied with each other, they’ll leave your curtains alone. Cats are social creatures, contrary to their reputation. They love human affection, and the best friend for a cat is another cat! Bonded pairs are great for first time cat owners, seasoned veterans, and everyone in between. Come down and meet our bonded pairs, Tuesday through Saturday 1pm to 6pm! See more

Humane Society for Greater Savannah 15.03.2019

Repost @tybeeislandpolicedept Seventeen dogs. Seventeen shelter dogs have benefited from our #K9ForADay program this year and with YOUR help, all seventeen have been adopted. Today we have a very special guest. Stella is the last dog to participate in the program this year and the FIRST dog to already have a home waiting for her when she gets back to the shelter this afternoon. Stella was chosen to participate today because she shares a name with the late daughter of our #K...9ForADay coordinator, a young lady who has served as an inspiration for this effort as well as our award winning Operation Starlight program. The Humane Society for Greater Savannah agreed that sending Stella on an adventure would be a poetic way to end such a successful first year. Thank you for all of the likes, comments, shares and support. You have made this program what it is today.

Are we bonding???? 6. Hi all!!! This is Atticus Dave! My wife and I adopted him from the shelter in 2017. He was well known at the shelter as Dave the Barbarian. But he celebrated turning 6 years old in November and he is a healthy boy. He’s changed our lives for the better. 7. Hello everyone!! I had the pleasure of adopting my baby Joey (known as Sweetie) back in September 2018.He was my first pet and now my spoiled baby. He came into my my life when I needed him the most. 8. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group!!I have adopted from HSGS through the years. Jack and Lucy I adopted 8 and 9 years ago. We have some great news to share - Velma’s amputation surgery at Brigdon Animal Hospital was successfully completed this week. Because her leg was injured for a long period of time, there was significant damage for the surgeons to contend with and surgery clocked in at more than 4 hours. A huge thank you to Dr. Brigdon and Dr. Hart and the rest of the staff at Brigdon Animal Hospital for taking such good care of our girl. Velma is recovering comfortably in her foster home, be...ing spoiled by her foster mom with homemade cooking and lots of extra love.
