A huge thank you to Bo Childs and his team at Wyatt Childs Inc. for hosting a socially distanced ICAA at Work event last Saturday in Barnesville, Georgia. It could not have been a more beautiful Georgia day to explore the treasurer filled barns and workshops, to learn about the resources and capabilities of Wyatt Childs. Some wide open space, inspiring materials, friends - new and old, and Fresh Air BBQ are all good for the soul. #icaasoutheast #classicism #reclaimedbuildingmaterials #englishandfrenchantiques #reclaimedstone #reclaimedbrick #antiquelumber #stonetroughs

Toward the northern end of the Loire Valley, we reach the city of Orleans where we will focus on the Cathedral Sainte-Croix d’Orleans. It’s stain glass windows tell the story of Joan of Arc liberating the city during the nine-day English siege. Notably, the cathedral's spire, designed by architect Emile Boeswilwald, was the source of inspiration for Viollet le Duc’s spire at Notre Dame de Paris. Interestingly, site contractor Auguste Bellu and master carpenter Henri George we...re responsible for the construction of both spires. This is a perfect subject to experiment with a new medium or technique. All skill levels are welcome to participate in this virtual sketch. Remember to forward a jpg of your sketch to [email protected] by noon on Monday, September 28 to be included in our afternoon post. As we continue to virtually travel along the Loire River, the Royal Chateau de Blois was this week's Virtual Graphite & Grits subject. Begun in the 13th Century as a medieval chateau the complex evolved through numerous additions and styles and finally was completed in 1638 for Gaston d'Orleans by Francois Monsart. The first sketch is of the Louis VII wing,1498-1508. The second sketch is of the interior of the Francois I stair tower, 1515-1524. ... Interested in learning about restoring a chateau in 2020? Over the next couple of weeks, Virtual Graphite & Grits will explore the Loire Valley in France. The Loire is the longest river in France and has been a center for great prosperity. This week we will focus on Chateau de Chambord and Chateau de Chenonceau. With it’s blending of traditional French medieval forms and a classical Renaissance architectural language, Chateau de Chambord is a 16th-century construction built as a hunting lodge for King Francis. The plan of the ...chateau is organized with a relentless symmetry that centers upon a grand double helix staircase, which was likely designed by Leonardo De Vinci. In contrast to the rigid symmetry of the plan, the rooftop is bursting with asymmetrical towers, cupolas, lanterns, and chimneys, for its 282 fireplaces. The rooftop experience feels more like a stroll through a small village rather than scuttling between gutters and gables. Chateau de Chenonceau is also known as Chateau des Dames, as it was commissioned, renovated, and owned by women only. In 1556-1559 architect Philibert de l’Orme constructed a bridge that connected the oldest part of the chateau to the banks across the Cher river. Jean Bullant then designed and built a grand gallery upon the bridge in 1570-1576. The elegance and whimsy of the chateau was the stage for many extravagant parties and the gallery used as a great dance hall. While under the direction of Madame Dupin, Chenonceau became a literary salon for the most famous French philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. This is also where Louise Dupin drafted the first Code of Women’s Rights. #icaasoutheast #classicism #GraphiteAndGrits #ConnectingThroughSketching #icaasoutheast #classicism #GraphiteAndGrits #ConnectingThroughSketching See more

Lutyens' Delhi is an area in New Delhi, India named after the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (18691944), who was responsible for much of the architectural design and building during the period of the British Raj when India was part of the British Empire during the 1920s,1930s, and 1940s. The Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's House pictured, along with other significant structures will serve as the reference images for this week's sketch and conclude the Graphite & Grits survey of the work of Sir Edwin Luytens. Due to the holiday weekend, sketches are due by noon on Tuesday 9/8 for a Tuesday afternoon post. #icaasoutheast #classicism #GraphiteAndGrits #ConnectingThroughSketching #lutyenstrust #lutyenstrustamerica
