Attention: Arkansas Coin-Business Owners, Collectors, and Investors Senator Mark Johnson introduced SB 336: To Create an Exemption from the Sales and Use Tax for Coins, Currency, and Bullion. The bill was referred to the Senate Revenue & Tax Committee. There was a committee hearing yesterday, Wednesday, March 10. ICTA submitted written testimony in support of the bill and ICTA's sales tax exemption expert, Pat Heller (Liberty Coin Service, Lansing, Michigan) testified in-person. The Committee has adopted a procedure where bills will be heard but postponing any vote on bills until later in the session. In the meantime, please contact the Committee members as soon as possible. ICTA member Wilshire Coin Exchange, Santa Monica, California, was featured yesterday in the USA TODAY online article "Gold, silver and other precious metals poured in to the U.S. as purchases of other overseas items dropped. Here's why." And in today's USA TODAY print edition MONEY+LIFE section article "Gold, Silver pour into US in pandemic." Kudos Wilshire Coin Exchange!

The Mississippi House Bill 375 (exempt gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion from the state sales tax) did not make it out of the House Ways and Means Committee. In other words, this bill was labeled "dead" because there was no further action on it by the Committee. However, another bill could be introduced again during the next session where there may be a better possibility to achieve something, especially if Arkansas and Tennessee enact exemptions this year. In the meantime, ICTA is looking for Mississippi dealers, collectors, and investors to assist in future grassroots efforts. For more information, visit www.ictaonline.org/join-icta.

Many states’ legislative sessions have been underway for nearly two months. The search for revenues by almost every state and local government entity to shore up budgets in the short term will result in some of the most aggressive, onerous, and outright outrageous economic legislation and regulation ever imaginedor even beyond imagination. With the help of Pat Heller (Liberty Coin Service), ICTA’s sales-tax exemption guru, we are working with our members in several local grassroot efforts to gain new exemptions and fighting any attempts to repeal existing ones. Read about these efforts in Heller’s Numismatic News column: Developments in Coin, Bullion Sales Tax Exemptions.

Congrats ICTA member Vincent Wade on your newly opened and expanded Pinehurst Coin Exchange offices! North Carolina gained a complete sales-and-use tax exemption on coins, currency, and precious-metals bullion sales in 2017 (read more here: https://bit.ly/37yrbf0). One of the many benefits from such an exemption are coin-businesses like Pinehurst Coin Exchange experience growth with higher profits and more jobs become available for workers. Coin-businesses pay income taxes, payroll taxes, and property taxes. They purchase equipment, supplies, and services, all of which contribute to the state and local economies. We wish Vincent continued growth and success!
