Crystal Muench works every week to arrange the floral donations from our community partner, Trader Joes, into beautiful flower arrangements for our patients. What drew you to hospice volunteering? My childhood best friend’s daughter died of a rare type of brain cancer at the age of five. During this, I was exposed to the work of the hospice volunteers that assisted her in their home and the hospital. After her passing, I decided to go back to school for social work because I ...wanted to be that person who helped change someone’s life for the better. I’m in school now, and volunteering allows me to stay connected to the hospice care community and truly hone my skills while I’m pursuing an education. You help organize and design the flowers that Trader Joes generously donates to the Inspiring Hospice Foundation for our patients every week. Have you worked in the floral industry before, because your arrangements are amazing?! In middle school, I worked in a nursery planting seeds, and by the end of the season, I had worked my way into the greenhouse where we monitored the plants that were grown. In high school, I worked in a wholesale nursery and eventually worked why up to the trees, and flowering plants. I love working with the soil, and if I can’t be out in the woods, at least I can occasionally get my hands dirty, helping the community. You have a real artistic eye, do you live a creative life or is floral arranging the extent of your artistry? I do not live an artistic life; I learned about composition, balance, and framing from my ex-husband, who is a professional photographer with an incredible eye. He truly taught me to look at the world differently and find beauty in everyday objects. Thank you so much for your volunteer work and for giving so freely of your time to our foundation and the patients we serve. It’s my pleasure! Thank you! https://inspiringhospicefoundation.com//volunteer-spotli/r

Our incredible volunteers have been working hard making masks in support of our patients, their families and our community. We owe a big collective ‘thank you’ to every hospice volunteer who has given so much of themselves at time when it’s so greatly needed!

As one might probably guess, social work and social distancing can be difficult to reconcile. During this time, we’ve been trying to discover innovative ways to connect with our patients, and more importantly, connect our patients to their families and loved ones. I am grateful for the opportunity to use Telehealth instruments to assist in this task. Phone calls and FaceTime visits have been a lifeline for all of us; our patients are able to communicate with loved ones who,... at this time, due to safety precautions in nursing facilities recommended by the CDC, are not able to visit with patients in person. This is a great burden to bear, since, as we know, hospice is for end of life care - a period of life when families usually want to spend more time together than ever. I recently scheduled a Telehealth visit to help the wife of one of our patients see her husband, who is currently in a facility. Before COVID19, she visited her husband daily. Now, due to the virus, she isn’t able to check on him and see him, she isn’t able to hug and kiss him as she did and has done, day after day, for over 20 years. Enter, FaceTime! Neither patient nor wife has any experience with the modality, so coordinating with one of our incredible nurses, we were able to successfully connect husband and wife, face-to-face, for the first time in weeks. The joy in both of their faces, the tears running down the cheeks of this patient’s wife, and the love between the two of them so quickly remind us why we do what we do: our patients deserve the best care possible. It is an honor to use modern technology to help families traverse these uncharted waters. It’s a scary time for us all, particularly our most vulnerable populations, but I can guarantee one thing: social workers and the entire team at Inspiring Hospice are rising to the challenge. We all hope things return to some sense of normalcy soon, but until they do, we are here! And as for our couple, they have a weekly scheduled FaceTime date. Another fantastic example of the work Inspiring Hospice Volunteers are doing everyday. These cards were written for our patients who are currently sheltering in place; a little reminder of how much they are loved and cherished.

A beautiful word from our sister hospice in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Hi Everyone, Yesterday morning as I drove through an empty downtown Klamath Falls-void of people and cars alikegiant snowflakes fell from the sky and gently fell across the empty streets, and for a moment it was like I was in some dystopian movie, half expecting a helicopter to land and guys in hazmat suits all pile out of it. I was struck by how I couldn't remember any natural cataclysm/ war/ B.S. like the C...Continue reading
