If you're unable to join us in person on Sunday mornings or Thursday evenings, our services are currently live-streamed on our YouTube channel (see link below!). We also have videos of recent sermons and Bible classes available there as well.
As a follow-up to a blog post a couple of months ago, here is part 2 on "Asking the Right Questions" It is my opinion that most of our questions can be broken down into either one of two categories. The first is questions of the form How should I behave? The second is questions of the form How should I understand/conceptualize this? We will look at an example of each of these styles of questions...
"What's the right interpretation?" "Well, that's just your interpretation." "There are many possible interpretations." Have you ever heard those things? Have you ever said those things? So, if two humans can be so far apart interpreting their own personal communications, how are we supposed to successfully interpret the Bible?
On Thursdays in January and February, we'll be considering Peter's letters to early Christians who were facing great suffering and opposition to their faith. Peter encourages these brethren to remember their purpose, to trust in God, and to remember the sufferings of Christ, and we can rely on the same sources for encouragement when faced with trials in our faith today. Join us in-person on Thursdays at 7:30PM!
Starting a new theme for the new year! 2021 might bring relief in some areas and hardships in others. Regardless, our focus will be dedicated to growth and maturation as believers and the ministry/work God has designed for us. Join us if you're in the area! http://www.intownatlantachurch.com
Our Bible class tonight is being moved to Zoom. We will be studying James 4-5, but instead of meeting at the building it will be totally virtual. Feel free to message us for the Zoom information!
Are there bad questions we should not ask? Better question, what are the right questions we should ask? The Bible is full of questions. Interestingly, the first question asked in the Bible is when the serpent asks Eve if the Creator *actually* commanded her to not eat the forbidden fruit. Later on, the first question man asks God is when Cain acrimoniously asks, Am I my brother’s keeper? It should then be no surprise that not all questions are good questions...
A couple of weeks ago, one of our members posed the question "Why do we take the Lord's Supper every week?" and provided a few answers we might consider. Every Sunday, we get together for many things, but taking the Lord’s Supper is one of the primary things we do. We do many things together on other days, but the Lord’s Supper is at the top of the list of reasons we make sure to gather on Sunday.
God still reigns, is just and fair, is always there for the troubled and doesn't abandon people that seek Him. Thank you Lord for being our King, Judge and Father Psalm 9:7-10 "But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness. The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you."
From a recent lesson Tim Haynes brought a few weeks ago, here is a summary that poses the question "Is God's Salvation Unconditional?"
There have been many crowds following Jesus all of His ministry. Some crowds have bad reactions and want to harm Him, some have mixed reactions, but many times the crowds have very positive reactions. Notice what the multitude does in Matthew 21 as Jesus is entering Jerusalem.
In Luke 21:1, Jesus sees all the different people putting money in the offering boxes at the temple. He sees the rich and maybe even could hear them putting in large sums of money. Then, He notices a widow as she puts in basically nothing. Jesus shows that He values differently than we do...
God's purpose and grace are seen in Jesus. As Paul begins his second letter to Timothy, his son in the faith, he mentions something in verses 9 and 10 that I think helps us as we consider Jesus death.
I was pondering the story of the prodigal son the other day and wondered what it might have been like if there was a brother in the story like Jesus. Perhaps a third brother, or just the older brother being a Jesus-like brother. There is a basis for this idea. Jesus is described as our brother in Romans 8:29 and Hebrews 2:11, 12, 17, and in many places we are described as being co-heirs with Jesus. So, how might that story have been different?
In Romans, Paul has spent some time explaining and being thorough in his expounding of God’s justice and righteousness. According to the law, all are guilty sinners, deserving death. I’ve never been a Jew, but it doesn’t matter. Paul has been clear that we are all without excuse. The judge ought to pronounce a guilty judgment on everyone of us.
